thinking of buying 1979 F150 with 460 - Opinions needed
Hey guys, I could use some input here. I would like to get a dedicated offroad truck and stop beating on my 2004. I always wanted a late 70's Ford with a 460 to have and build up. I came across this one, let me know what you think about price and such. I am kind of new to older trucks, so some help would be appreciated. Here are the links to the two different adds.
It looks like good starter. OK 35" tires that should do great in the sand dunes ( A lack of tread can be GREAT for sand, less digging ). 9 inch with Detroit Locker in rear, Dana 44 with truetrac in front. 4.11 Gears
The 460 seems to be pretty built. I will admit I don't know much about this kind of stuff though. I just know I think a 460 is really cool (no replacement for displacement). I guess buying this would be a good way to learn about them.

i love those old 70's pickups but for 3000 dollars i dont know about that one. the most i would personally give for it is about 2000. everything looks to be good. frame looks pretty good from what i could see. the body looked pretty good with just a few minor spots of rust. but it also said some pinholes in the cab floors. i guess it depends on how much its worth to you. but i want to get me my own 76 f250 with a 390 because i grew up around these trucks. my friend has a 77 f250 blue and silver pickup that had a 351m. he paid 750 for it and the frame doesnt have a spec of rust. i claim its mine all the time because i did almost all the work to it and he always says its half mine. he had me put a 429cj in it that we pulled out of another one of his trucks. and he's only got 1500 in the truck and that includes buying it. so i bet you could find something cheaper and find a motor for it and you and a few friends could do alot of work to it.
heres the truck right here

edit: you could also think about all the parts you could possibly sell like the differentials, trans, transfer case, and body and frame. and keep the 460

Personally I wouldn't take that truck. Ford didn't put the 460 in a half ton. The 3/4 ton truck has a leaf front suspention and the half ton has coils. I would look for a 3/4 ton for what your doing. It is a lot stronger. Bigger rear axle too. A 9 inch is a great axle.. for a car. I wouldn't pull around a big truck with a big block with it though. You can find a better deal I think.
Yours was the exception then. They are VERY good motors. Far better than a BBC.
Can't hurt to talk to him and see if he'd take less. Sounds like he wants it gone bad. And the 460 is just icing on the cake, doesn't matter if it came factory or not. The 9" axle is fine, they're used in drag racing all the time and it'll be just fine in that truck.

The ring and pinion in a 9 inch will hold up just fine. The axle tubes are the weak link in a heavy truck bouncing over burms. I wouldn't want it for that reason. I am not knocking the 9 inch.. just the aplication. The truck at the right price is fine.. and when the axle tube bends or breaks... upgrade. The front axle is no heavy duty unit either.
mine was horn! Just thought they came that way....bought it VERY VERY used for about a grand.
You need to buy this truck. You need to remove the 3 inch body lift.
When the axles go, you need to replace them with 8 lug axles. Not sure if the 9 inch will break or not, but if that is a 44 in the front, it may have some issues with a 460 and big tires. Dana ftw.
Other than that, it looks like it is set up fairly nice, the body looks good, if there isn't a ton of rust on it, you need that truck.
