ATTENTION FREE ISP USERS!!!
I got bored so I put my mind to getting rid of those damned annoying banner ads!!! I AM THE MAN!!!
Here's how it's done:
Note: I assume no responsibility for any damage you cause by doing this. I assume you'll be able to handle yourself while doing it, as it's very simple. Also, it's late, and I'm in a hurry, so please forgive any typing / grammer errors. This is for entertainment / educational purposes only, what you do with this knowledge is your business. Also, if you depend on your free ISP software for email, you may not wish to do this.
If you don't already have a free ISP, go to http://www.thekansascitychannel.com and go to the bottom where it says, Free internet, email, etc. Go through the setup process and download the software. Once the software is dl'ed and installed, go through it's setup process as well. Now, go to http://www.snadboy.com and download Revelation 1.1 and install it. Now, go to http://www.zdnet.com and search for PC software called "Start Cop" and install it. You're all ready to go...now:
- Logon to your free ISP account, and go to Start, Settings, Control Panel, Dial Up Networking, ans select the free ISP icon. Right-click and go to properties, and click on the Security tab. If you don't ahve the security tab, just log off your free ISP account, and double click the free ISP icon, rather than right clicking. Now, see where it lists your password which is much longer than you real password? It lists it as a group of stars, so what you need to do is lauch Revelation 1.1, and click, and drag the cross-hairs over these stars, and it will tell you what the real password is in the Revelation box. Copy this number down, as well as the full user name!!!
Great, now...cancel out of your free ISP properties, and rename the icon to something like, "Free ISP," rather than what it is already called.
Now, launch "Start Cop", and find the entry for your free ISP software. I forgot what mine was called, but if you click "details", it will tell you what the path of the entry is in the registry, and the one your looking for is, the one entered by your free ISP spftware. You'll see it eventually, their should only be like 10 entries or so. Now, when you find it, you'll want to select the "Pack for removal" button, and reboot. Once rebooted, lauch "Start Cop" again, and click the red skull that appears after selecting the value. This will permanetly remove the value from the resistry.
Now, with this done, go to Start, Settings, Control Panel, Add / Remove Programs, and remove the free ISP program from the hard drive, and any icons left on the desktop.
Go back to your Dial-Up properties, and right click on the "Free ISP" icon, and go to it's properties. Make sure it's not trying to dial a long distance number, and go to the Security tab...make sure the FULL user name, and "secret" password is entered, and you're all set. Create a shortcut to the icon, and place it on the desktop. Now, double-click, and you're off...make sure the "secret" password is what is listed there, and you should be free to roam, with no damned annoying software to hold you back!!! Email for details if you must...I'm sure these directions suck!!!
Good luck, and enjoy. It only took me about 30 mins. to figure out, and it worked the first time, with no glitches.

The bubble has burst. Nobody ever clicks on those ads. They are all going broke. Think of the money it takes to run a big *** ISP. All of their money was ad based. Now the ad guys are saying, why pay all that money for no click-throughs. Bye bye free ISP's. I'm sure a couple will hang in there, but most will fold. Just suck it up and get a Cable Modem or DSL if it's in your area. I think it's well worth the 40 a month. I get 800/400 kbs dl/ul on the cheapest DSL service.
