Question

Umm, I'm guessing you've never pulled a trailer before? PLEASE find an open field or empty parking lot to practice in before hitting the streets or boatramps
I'm gonna assume you've got an F-150, which many come with a receiver hitch from the factory. If it didn't, you can buy one for about $100 from many places. You will also need the receiver which slides into the hitch and a pin. You'll also need a ball for the receiver. OR, you can cut up the pretty piece of plastic on your bumper and just put a ball on(the correct size to match your boat's coupler) Good Luck!

Correction... the reciever is the part that mounts to the truck, the DRAWBAR is the piece that slides into the reciever and the ball mounts to.

Cool

jjim69, usually, the ball and drawbar are two different items. A ball is $8-10. The drawbar runs about $20 for black or $30 for a 'nice' chrome one like mine.

I don't leave it in the receiver though. I keep it behind the seat and have a 'nice' chrome plug.

My drawbar is so shiny that when I go to the boatramp, everybody runs away screaming "Rookie!".

Thumbs up

I have two receivers for my truck. One that I keep on when just driving around town (this is the one that I use to keep people from running into me) It sticks out quite a few inchs from the hitch, it's rusty and has a really ugly ball on it. The other is my Equalizar Hitch that I use to pull my trailer with. When it's on the truck, I use a ball that's chrome and rated at 20k lbs. I most diffinately have a lock on it. Wouldn't want someone thinking they needed it worse than me!
jjim69: when you go looking for a receiver, make sure you check out where your hitch is compaired to where the trailer is. Receivers come in different drop lengths. And you need to measure this drop.

------------------
2k F250 CC SWB 6 speed 4x2 Diesel XLT Super Duty, Woodland Green
Power Mirrors, 3.73 LS, Captains Chairs, ARE tonneau top, rear privacy glass

rugged liner bedliner on tailgate, quick disconnect jumper cables

I guess it depends on where you're from as to what you call it. No wonder you got confused. Just tell 'em at the boat shop to check out your hitch and tell you what you need

I got the impression from jjim69's post that he isn't interested in towing, he just wanted a defensive thwarting weapon like Tina mentioned.

Also, I want to confess that I too mispelled 'receiver' but, caught it before I submitted.

I'm not really as swab and sophisticated as people think.

How much can you tow if you were try and tow something with that hole in your bumber and a ball and are there any disadvantages besides not being able to tow as much weight.

Thanks,

Hey InfiniteMhz, I think the bumper is still 5000 with 500 on the tongue. The bad thing about a ball in the bumper that I have found is that the ball is 2 feet off the ground with no way to adjust it down. For smaller trailers that's too high. They may hook up without the rear of the trailer hitting the ground but, when their not level they fishtail too much for me.

Especially when you've got grease all over the ball. Talk about adding insult to injury. I've used the bumper mount (on previous 2WD trucks) for the boat only, so that it was high enough in front to drain on the way home. No, it's not a very good boat, it leaks.

Cool

I have a draw bar with "dual *****". ONe is 1 7/8" and the other is 2". I just flip my ***** so I have a good fit in whatever I drag home. Some need bigger ***** than others. The bumper mount ***** are almost impossible to get off after a few years. By then they can be a little rusty and the nuts can be over-torqued.
