What to do in Philly?

Yet again I'm off traveling for work and this time I'll be going to Philly for a few weeks.

Any and all suggestions for places to see, places to eat and places to drink are appreciated!

Sorry to hear that. Give Dzervit a holler, he might be able to protect you

Cheesesteaks. They don't get any better.

Take the tour of Eastern State Penitentiary. I haven't gotten around to taking the official day tour but I've gone to the haunted house they hold there every year multiple times. Just being inside the walls is pretty neat. The haunted house has you walking down some of the cell blocks but since it's all decked out for Halloween you don't get the real effect. I've been meaning to get down for the day tour.

Philadelphia Zoo is nice.

Franklin Institute - I haven't been there in a long time.

Independence Hall where The Declaration of Independence and the US Constitution were signed.

Fairmount Park

Independance Seaport Museum

Philadelphia Museum of Art

Get a cheesesteak from every shop you pass.

The last time I was in Philly I stayed at the Fairfield Inn near the airport and went to get a cheesesteak at this litte he11hole of a place about three miles from there. I can't remember the name of the place (it was at a street corner with a couple other CS places in a very so-so part of town) and was worried about getting mugged, but DAMN WAS THAT A GOOD CHEESESTEAK!

In fact, it was so good that I can't wait to go back and tempt the "mugging gods" one more time for another one of their sandwiches!

Actually, I think Philly gets a bad rap -- I've always enjoyed the place when I've gone there on business.......

Was that Geno's or Pat's at 9th and Passyunk? Those are the 2 best in the city according to several reviewers.

Philly has a bad rap for a reason. It's a rough city. Ask the Eagles. There have been a lot of cops killed over the last year or so.

So you're saying I should bring my pistol?

How about some places/parts of town to avoid?

Philly is a big city. There are good parts and bad parts. It has a lot of historical value so there is a lot of see and do but you do need to watch where you go. You'll generally know those places when you see them.

While you're there, tune in to 93.3 fm from 6-10:30ish for one of the best radio shows ever.

We'll be staying right on the Delaware River, downtown near Penn's Landing. I have no idea what that part of town is like, guess I'll find out a week from Sunday when I arrive.

I assume that's 6-10:30 in the AM?

Correct. I usually have an hour or so drive to jobsites in the morning so I as long as I'm in range I always listen to it. It just sucks that I can never finish listening to the show. Maybe you'll get lucky enough to catch one of their games like Crackshot, Toddler Theatre or Butt Plug Karoake. They sound weird but they're hilarious.

Cool. That area is the best place to stay. You'll be right next to South Street, which is where the best night life is at. Check out South Street on a Friday or Saturday night. Also, there is a real good restaurant called Moshulu in an authentic sailing ship right there on Columbus Blvd.

Bad areas in Philly are no different than most major cities. Anyone who has some street smarts will know what to avoid.

Have fun. Make sure you get a cheesesteak - preferably not at Pat's or Gino's unless you like CheeseWiz.

If you are staying in the Penns Landing area you are just outside of some of the best parts of the city. South Street and Olde City offer some of the best exposure and night life. Many a nights a week I find myself out and about in Olde City. If you aren't into the party thing there is alot more the city has to offer you. Eastern State Penn, the prison someone mentioned is awesome. Take the tour it is worth it. Its pretty wild to think someone spent their life locked up in there. Two of the best websites for the city are http://www.gophila.org and http://www.philly2nite.com The first has EVERYTHING there is to do in the city and the second is EVERYTHING there is to do with night life in the city. Geno's has the best cheese steaks.period. But alot of the local shops offer their own great variety of steak sandwich. Tony Luke's has unbelievable sandwiches as well if you like pork and roast beef. Anything else just ask. I am born and raised in Philly and will probably never leave.
