HELP! GOTTA de-power my airbag!
Thanks Dennis - a switch would work GREAT! I never thought of that & I'll sign any papers necessary (except the title to my truck of course!) to get it! I'll call around & check it out!
Bye for now!

I would rather keep my airbag and go with a set of these:

Of course this is a bad idea if you're not the only driver.

Well, I am the only driver so this is also an option! Are they homemade or do they sell these blocks? As long as I can be sure they don't fall off & I end up unable to reach the brake pedal I can try this too!
Gee - as answer from President Raoul himself! LOL! Thanks Mr. President!

Well I never had a problem being to close to the steering wheel in my old 97F150 but did have that problem when I got my new truck. How tall are you?? I'm 5'1" (and having to stretch for that extra inch too) I'm more comfortable if my driving arm is almost straight while driving and that gives me more room away from that airbag. When I got my new truck, the clutch was soooo stiff and it required soooo much muscle to push it in, that I had to be closer to the wheel. Now my leg is stronger and I use my toes to push it in.
Thereby allowing me to straighten my driving arm again and drive the way that's more comfortable to me. You've got the auto, try shifting your driving position so your arms are straighter (lean the seat back) That doesn't mean move the bottom of the seat!!! Try this and let us know if it works for you.

You may want to shop around, looks like this company is $138 for a set.

Thanks folks! Tina - I'm 5'2" but my legs are short! I have a 28" inseam if I measure the correct way so I have problems in every vehicle I drive. I love the look on a mechanics face when they get in to move the car/truck & can't even squeeze in! Then I slide in after them & I can't get anywhere close to the pedals because they moved the seat back!
Raoul - thanks! I will look around but that site also has a form I can print/fill out to get permission for a cut off switch. I'll fill it in & submit it & hopefully I can find a place to install it.
Thanks everyone - I appreciate the help. Now let's hope I can get this fixed before I meet the airbag, up close & personal! LOL!

I REALLY need to get my side airbag de-powered! I have to sit with the seat pulled ALL the way up. I am LESS THAN 6" from the steering wheel! If that airbag goes off I'll be dead!
Let's put it this way - when I wear my down jacket, it RUBS the wheel as I steer! I either have to let the truck warm up sufficiently to drive w/o a jacket or get in a cold truck & shiver till it's warm. I really have a problem with the jacket being into the wheel. Can you imagine how close I am to the airbag? My seat belt is always tight as just having the seat so far forward takes up ALOT of slack & I have 1 of those clips to help keep the belt off my throat! That alone would snap my neck!
I am a careful driver - I want this truck to last FORD-ever but I have no control of other drivers, deer or a million other accidents waiting to happen!
If ANYONE knows how I can de-power the airbag, PLEASE email me! It is legal in NY to do this BUT no mechanic/shop wants the liability to do it. I'm willing to do it myself IF I know how! Will pulling the fuses do it? I located 2 fuses per the owner's manual & am tempted to yank them but I'm afraid it won't work. I can imagine the airbag going off as I'm driving!
I really need help - I just read all the posts about various injuries due to airbags & I'm plenty scared!
I'm VERY GLAD nobody was seriuosly injured & that everything turned out ok. I hope everyone stays safe. I just lost my Dad 2 weeks ago - I know how hard it is to lose someone you love & thank God, all of you survived.
Take care - hope to hear from someone soon! Bye for now!

My wife is also 5'1" -- and she worries about having her head shot thru the sliding window.
I didn't know about the 01's having an electric pedal extender option, or I'd have waited.
One of these days, I'll look into a retro-fit for that option -- can't cost more than $500 or so for the parts.

If I am not mistaking the airbags produce 1 ohm of resistance, so if you do not want the airbag to operate, disconnect the airbag and place a 1ohm resistor in the socket to prevent the airbag light from coming on. Also remember to disconnect the battery as to not set off the airbag. Just a suggestion.
One other option is to ask Ford about the pedals that they install in the SuperCrews.
They extend with a switch and would only improve safety (plus the value of your truck).
Sorry no pictures but they do work, check them out at your dealer and see if it's expensive.
