Installing 2nd Hard Drive

Installing 2nd Hard Drive

Im looking to install a second hard drive on my computer to save music and movies to, and i was wondering what all I have to do to get it to work. Its a 320 GB hard drive, thanks in advance

If it is SATA, make sure the PC is off, open it up, connect one of the power connectors to the back of the hard drive, connect a SATA cable from the motherboard to the hard drive, then mount the hard drive in one of the rail slots.

It's an EIDE hard drive.

I haven't installed an IDE HD in a while, so maybe this will help you out.

If it's a new drive you will have to partition and format it once it's installed.
Right click My computer/Manage/Disk Management then you'll see the drive on the right showing as unallocated. Just right click it and partition and format. Unless you want to split it into smaller sections just click Yes/Next etc until it's done.

Alright, well i tried to do it, had my computer turned off and opened up and once i got there i see there isn't a second 40 bit connector on the hard drive cable. So can i just buy a cable with a 2nd 40 bit connector on it or am i s.o.l.?

Yes, buy a new 80 wire Ultra ATA cable. Jumper *BOTH* drives to Cable Select (CS), connect the blue connector to the motherboard, the black connector on the other end to the original drive, and the gray middle connector to the new drive.
