is it just me or is vista's wireless network just crap? i can be online and then everything stops, cant ping anything but it says i have connection to the internet. meanwhile my moms laptop with xp is fine.
then whenever i try to reconnect it does the same thing, says im online but i cant browse anything or ping anywhere.

Vista is total crap in my opinion. I absolutely hate it.
The corporate world generally shares my opinion. Most IT directors won't touch it with a 10 foot pole. Microsoft is finally figuring out that it's a turkey - that's why they are really pushing to get Windows 7 ready and they keep extending XP support. The major OEM's for consumer grade computers don't care, they figure the general public is ignorant. It's getting harder and harder to buy a name brand consumer grade computer that's XP-compatible, much less *with* XP.
Back to your issue - yes, Vista's wireless can be a pain. Can you use a cable instead?

rather not do hard wire, its router is on the other end of the house.i suppose i could but then my wireless n is pointless...
god its so frustrating that it acts retarded so often.

I just bought a Dell XPS laptop about two months ago and unfortunately XP wasn't offered as an OS. Luckily I found a couple things to do that were crucial. While all this isn't required, it helps tremendously. Most that get Vista don't bother removing bloatware or tweaking it at all, which is part of the reason why it's so resource intensive.
Reformat and Bloatware Removal
Vista Tweaks
While it wasn't required to do this, I'm sure it helped a ton. If you don't bother then I agree that XP is better than Vista. My laptop runs Vista beautifully, though, so I have no problems with it.

The problem I have with the wireless router is the automatic assignment of DNS when another computer or usually video game logs on, it will try to assign itself to a DNS that it has received before. When it does that nothing in the house connects right. What I do to fix this on mine, is to clear all the old connection configurations, and let it find a new dns to use. It always works until the video games or Itunes get involved. Then I reboot the modem and router
The re boot always works best for me from the modem up.
Edit : I intended to say IP address

I have had tons of issues with Vista on the N side of my wireless network ..
It screams on the G side .. no idea why .. same computer, sitting in the same location.
I get this on the N side:

and this on the G side:

all of the machines running XP are fast on the N side. I have tried every tweak I can find .. nothing has worked .. so I just leave the two vista laptops on the G side of the network.
