gps dashmounted or cell phone?

i want to get gps for my truck. what do you think i should get one on my sprint cell or a dash mounted one like garmin or tomtom? i can add the gps to my cell for $30 a month for all 3 of my cell phones. i would like to not have to worry about having my truck broking in for having a gps on the dash but it would be nice to not have to pay a monthly fee for gps to. what does everyone have and do you like it?

dash mounted. they are alot easier to use and end up being cheaper in the long run

Stick with garmin for a dash mount. A friend of mine had a tom tom and that damn thing got us lost more times then I can count. I used a garmin for a while, but I never really liked using them, but it was handy that it had all the points of interest programed in. I was taught to navigate using map books, and I'm still using them today. I don't like the idea of blindly following a computer.

I like the GPS on my phone. I can use it anywhere, biking, walking, etc. I have a Garmin handheld that I use for hunting and boating.

Get a dash mounted GPS. I have a garmin and it works great. If you want to do all that hunting and fishing etc. Just unhook it from the dash mount and take it with you. You only have to pay for it once. There are updates available for them that you can also buy if it gets years out of date. The company recommends updating every year, but your call.

Another vote for Garmin. Mine saved me twice after I printed off directions on Mapquest that were wrong...

If you go the phone route and pay $30 a month then you'll have paid off a $300 dash-mounted one in under a year...

Dash mount. Tried the GPS on my Blackberry that came with Sprint. It was ok, but drained the battery really quick. My Garmin Nuvi 250? is soooo much better.

I got a Garmin Nuvi 260W for Christmas. I finally used it this past weekend. That thing is great. I tried it for a test trip to the bowling alley one night to make sure it worked before I took it anywhere far. The points of interest being programmed in are awesome. Too bad every bowling alley was listed except the one I wanted. So I put in the intersection and hit the road. Works great. I'd get dash mount. The Garmin Nuvi just pops out and you can take it with you or put it in your console or something.

As a part-time cabbie, do yourself a favour and get a Garmin.
Over the course of 2 weeks, I tried 5 or 6 various GPS units from BestBuy.
I told the manager upfront what I was doing, and she was totally cool.

For a week, I used a Garmin Nuvi 760 & a TomTom GO930 side by side.
I figured the best way to know for sure was to use both at the same time, and who better than a cab driver to run the test?

In a week, I prob ran about 150 routes on both units simultaneously, and the Garmin was the winner.
I'm not saying the Tom Tom is junk, because it's not, but like the movie The Highlander...

There Can Be Only One.

They are cheap now anyway, I've seen 760-'s online for $200.

My Garmin's voice is Dr Nightmare. The guy is weird. It's a spooky voice with an evil laugh. He randomly talks to me on long stretches of road but I'm sure they all do that. I'm not so thrilled about him telling me we should go visit the morgue though.

Ah... Seriously? Can you change the voice settings?

On the 260 you can. I have no idea about the others. I downloaded the voice but there are a bunch of them programmed in already. Australian guy and girl, British, French, Italian, etc. I downloaded DR Nightmare though from the garmin website. You can download vehicles too. I appear on the map as a monster truck right now. But you can be a car, race car, eagles, golf cart, etc. It's got a bunch of other stuff too. I can load pictures to it for whatever reason, calculator, unit of measurement converter.

Dr Nightmare... http://www8.garmin.com/vehicles/voices/halloween.html
