Question What is the best Digital Camera?

I am in the market for a Digital Camera, and am looking for some good advice.

Of the people out there with D-Cameras, who makes the best and why? How much?

Eph1fifty, I know you have the Kodak DC215, I have read a lot about it, it seems like a good camera for the money.

Thanks in advance, Brandon

Brandon, I just bought a new digital camera myself and I am loving every second of it. I did a lot of research myself and bought the one that I thought would be the best for me.

I went to Circuit Cities website, www.circuitcity.com, and they break down all of the camera they have. Out of all the sites I looked at they have the best information on the camera they offer. But look around at different sites. www.ritzcamera.com is another good site.

I personally bought a Olympus D360L and for the price the camera is awesome. Has great features, including a zoom. Comes with software so you can download the pics, and fix them up, add text, stuff like that. I bought mine for $381. But that includes Circuit Cities 4 year program. If anything happens and they can't fix it or I don't like the quality of the pictures I can get the money I paid for the camera or a camera that is the same quality as the one I have now. That's on top of the 1 year warranty that comes with the camera. I have taken a lot of pics with it. Check out my post...Deer did this to me. Has some pics I took witht he camera.

Well just my opinion. But do a lot of research and get the camera that is going to fit you best. Good Luck!

Cheif, I have the same Olympus and have to agree, EXCELLENT camera for the money. I think I paid about $270 at a Best Buy. The image quality is fantastic especially in SHQ mode.

I've been looking around and looked at the Olympus and Kodaks you folks refer to. My question is, how hard is it to get working with your computer? I just bought a new Dell 4100 series which has a regular serial port ( I think ) and that new USB port too. Which port does these cameras use or does it depend on the brand?

Any help is appreciated---Bob

For all those interested, the November issue of Consumer Reports Magazine has comparisons and ratings of many 1, 2, and 3 Megapixel cameras. It's a good read for anyone considering buying one, or just learning what they can do............

I use an Olympus C2020L (or something like that) which uses "SmartMedia" cards. Downloading them to the PC via the serial port is kind of time consuming, so I bought a Sandisk SmartMedia reader. It plugs into a USB port and lets you see your SmartMedia cards as if they were another drive. Very slick.

I have an Epson 850Z for home and a Nikon 950 at work. Both take great pics (2.1mp).
I actually like using the Epson better due to its 35mm SLR body feel and USB download ability. The Nikon requires a slow, slow serial port or you have to remove the card and download via a USB reader or a pc card adapter(laptops). With the Epson, plug in the camera download and go.

I have the Sony Mavica FD-91 camera. It's very nice because it uses standard floppy disks, so it's a breeze popping them in the floppy drive. I usually get about 15-20 pics in HD and 30-35 in regular definition. I paid $630.00 from www.ubid.com

Well I just bought a Kodak DC215 and I think its great! I'm used to a better DC260 camera but the DC215 is not missing much to be as good as the 260! And we use the 260 professionally for print!

I will warn you to stay away from Vivtar cameras. I had one for a week before buying my Olympus. The Vivitar: Pure Junk. I tried contacting their tech support, but what you get is an answering machine stating the business hours "9-12 and 1-5". What, only one guy there in tech support? You guessed it. And he's rude. Their web site offers the same massed produced tech docs with now personalization to your problem. It was so bad that the online auction co I bought it from (Egghead.com/Onsale.com which normally do not do returns) took it back because they couldn't even get ahold of anyone worth a d@mn at Vivitar.

Cool

I have a Fuji Finepix 4700 Zoom. Check out my site for pics I've taken with it. This pic turned out to be almost artsy...
http://www.zing.com/picture/pd7d3ab7...3.jpg.orig.jpg

My problem with the Sony's are that they compress the crap out of the pics to make them fit on a floppy. You can't really get an original, uncompressed image. The Fuji is similar, but you can reduce the compression so it is almost non-existant. I wanted high quality originals, file size be damned.

I use a 64 MB Smartmedia card and can fit over 30 pics at max resolution(2400x1800) with the least compression. I use a Sandisk card reader too, very nice. Get one, it'll save time and battery life.

The best digital camera out there right now is the Nikon Cool Pixs 990..best selection of add on lenses and accessories, price is alittle high, but, rated one of the best. You probably could do better, if, you shopped around. Check out www.steves-digicams.com, plenty of reviews on digital cameras and prices.

2000 F-150,
I also just bought the Fuji Finepix 4700. What an awesome camera! It is replacing my Olympus 360L which is also a very nice starter camera. Just got the Fuji a couple days ago, so I am still messing with it figuring out all the goodies. From what I see so far....I highly recommend it.
