Wink Here I go - AGAIN!

Does anyone wanna hear about ANOTHER truck? I am going to see it tomorrow. My ex-future brother-in-law has a good friend he trusts very much who has a used lot. He told Andy to watch for a truck for me. Well, Andy called today. Said he just got a '97 F150 XLT in & it is in my price range. It has 17" tires (I'm 5'2" - anyone got a ladder?), nerf bars & the off road package. It also has the 4.6l V8 & only 54,000 miles. He said Kevin told him to take care of me so he's asking $14,8! PLUS - are you ready for this, are you sititng down(?) - he's going to get it pin stripped for me for guess how much? FREE!
Okay - what do you think? I'm not usually very lucky - I once entered a Chinese Auction & there were 2 - count 'em TWO entires. I was 1 of the 2. I lost! So, I am just a LITTLE, TEENSY bit nerous about this truck! If I remember correctly, off road package, nerf bars & 17" tires = monster truck wanna be! Am I right? Does anyone have a truck like this & if so, do you drive it everyday? Will the off road package be okay in snow? I'm assuming the 4.6 gets decent mileage & also assuming the gearing is good for traction but I have been wrong before. LOL!
Let me ask each of you this - if you needed, I mean REALLY NEEDED a reliable truck for everyday use would you consider this truck? I admit I LOVE the idea of a serious truck but I have a practical side that rears it's ugly head every time I have a chance to have fun!
Please let me know what you think so I can get my head on straight BEFOORE I go look at the truck of my dreams!
Thanks again! Bye!

I would go to www.kbb.com and check for a price. Now, I think they are on the high end on retail. But, look at the trade in and retail. I would think inbetween the two is a fair price. Also, check out www.carfax.com and do a lemon check. And have it checked out by a mechanic. If that looks good go for it. Live a little and get what you want. You will regret it later!

If it makes you feel better, I have a 97 4x4 XLT with the off-road package! This truck handles very good on the roads. I'd say better than most 4x4 trucks on the road! they are great in winter do not worry about it.

I have had it for over 20,000 kms now and it is a great truck! I love it. I have the V6 and the crappy gearing "3.08" although I do get somewhat good mileage on the highways. I use this truck as a daily driver and a weekend off-roader! I had all 4 wheels in the air and never really broke something except the usual dings etc...

They are great trucks Please enjoy and all the best of luck to ya (if you get it).

Thanks eph1fifty! I appreciate the help! I am so excited I am wide awake! I'll pay for it come 5 AM but it will be worth it! I hope! I keep thinking SOMETHING has to be wrong with this truck - I'm not lucky enough to get a deal this good!
I'll let you know what happens when I get back form seeing/driving it. Wish me luck!
And a prayer might be a good idea too!
BTW - I saw your other post - did you get my Happy Birthday wish! May you have many, many more - all in F 150"s!!!
Talk to you soon! Bye!

The off-road package is nothing to be concerned with. A lot of trucks have it, 17 inch wheels will not make it that much higher. I have not posted on this topic yet, but have been following your adventure, and so far this sounds like the best truck. Like Kirby said, check the price online. Good luck.

Sure, we'll 'listen' about any of 'em you find. Free advice (good) is better than making a 15k mistake that you won't be happy with. I think that sounds like a pretty good deal, depending on how many dents, etc. it has in it. I paid $16,500 for my Lariat a few months ago, but it was at 77,000 miles. I still love it more than any truck I've ever owned. On your other post, don't know if a 3/4 ton (F-250) would be the best choice for ya though unless you planned on really USING it for what it's made for. Is this one an extended cab? Short or Long Bed? This one sounds pretty good, but see if you can at least get a 30 day, or even 90 day warranty to work out any problems it may have. Good Luck!

Oh yea, I only get about 13-15 mpg with it. It think that's about 'normal' from reading other posts.

Cowlady: this one really does sound good. Go back over all the other posts/advice we've given you here. Write everything down that everyone has told you to check. Grab your mechanic and go test drive that truck
Almost forgot: You're taller than I am and I manage to drive an F250 SuperDuty Diesel. Of course running boards do help But if you don't have them, just do like I used to do w/my old F150 4x4, grab the steering wheel and haul yourself in

What I want is a bit more detail on how one becomes an "ex-future brother-in-law."

Ok - on my way NOW to see the truck. Just found out it's a SUPERCAB too!
I will be posting later so check back after 8:30, ok?
As for Kevin, I was engaged to his brother, David. David was a very NOT nice "man" & I broke away after 8 years of hell. Kevin was always nice to me though & when I started to look for a truck I went to him for help. He immediately said yes & was out many evenings looking around for something for me. He's the best guy I could ask for help - he has nearly every part # for every Ford in his head! His nickname is Mr Ford so I trust him more than anyone else! He told me today that if I turn the truck down hes going to buy it! Well, I don't think so! If Kevin thinks it's that good then that's all I need to know. He won't drive junk - you should see his FULL DRESS Harley! He's buying a 2001 soon because this is 2 years old! He's as fussy as any man (sorry guys! ) & he's honest. Gee - if his brother were like him we'd still be together! Maybe!
Okay - gotta run! Catch you SOON! Wish me luck & say a prayer!

Sounds just like my truck. A 97 XLT 4x4 S/C with the 4.6, mine has 82,000 on it though. Runs fine, handles good. But mine has entered the high maintenance era. New brakes, plugs(again), needs shocks, and various small things. Anyone with any mechanical aptitude can do these with little trouble.
Sounds like a good truck, I wish you good luck with it.
By the way, mine is black with a white pinstripe.
