Cool

Depends on the applications you will be running!! Heavy graphics/Web or multi-apps go with a PIII. Celeron and AMD are O.K. for the basics(word processing/spreadsheets/basic database).
I use a Dell 3800 w/700 PIII and a Dell 7500 w/500 PIII - VERY NICE.

IMHO, business applications perform equally well on a pentium (II or III) or amd K6-2 (or higher, like athlon). It's the video games that perform better on the Pentiums, which tend to have a faster floating point unit (fpu).

I don't have experience with the mobile versions of the AMD processors, but AMD powered machines are a much better value than pentium based. For maximum value, look for what was top-of-the line 1-2 years ago. I find the best deals at http://www.pricewatch.com

Two of the big considerations when buying a laptop is battery life and screen size. Get something that can support at LEAST 800x600 and 2 hrs of battery time. Otherwise, buy a car adapter, or a cheap 150W inverter for $50.

For general use: >14" display (active matrix is always nice, but much more $), 400 Mhz or faster, 64Mb memory (you can get by with 32, but the operating systems these days will thrash your hard drive), 4Gig hard drive.

Cool laptops

If you think this has nothing to do with trucks - your wrong. Actually I want to purchase a laptop to take on my "big trip".
I just wondered if any of you have suggestions.
I prefer the AMD-K6-2, or their newer one.
I have heard that the Intel Celron is garbage.
Which one EH!!, as we say in Canada.
Tnx in advance for any info.

Whatever you do, go with the one with the best warranty available, especially if you're gonna be dragging it all around the country.

Cool

Make sure you get a really good case with lots of padding, and maybe even a padded sleve as well. My Dell crashed the first week I had it on the very first trip I used it on.
