Need to know where to start...

I just bought a 1987 F150 with the I6 motor and a 3 speed auto tranny. The body is in great shape but the interior and motor are in need of a little TLC. I want to turn this into a hobby / project but I dont know where to start with improving the performance and looks under the hood. The only problem with driving is that it dies at idle, once I put it in gear it's fine but if I dont give it gas in idle it will sputter and die. I plan to give it a tune up this weekend but I dont know where to go after that. Any idea's on how to give it a little omph and growl without getting in over my head? Thanks!

you could adjust your idle a little bit to prevent it from dying. has the truck been sitting before you bought it? give us some details the PO told you that might help us out with helping you. what are your plans for the truck?

The PO told me that it had that problem and that he didn't know what was causing it. The PO also told me that it had a rebuild about 87K ago. The motor has about 230K on it. AS for what i'd like to do to it, i'd like to make it look and sound nice. I'm not going to go out racing or anything but i'd like to turn her on and hear a nice rumble. I'd also like to make it look sweet when I pop the hood to show off to friends and family. Thanks!
