Top 3 times on ADSL:

1854.5 / 227.3
6800 / 833.3
8160 / 1000

I did the above test at around 7:30 am Eastern... The following test was just done at around 2:30 pm Eastern.

323.8 / 39.7

These speeds, I believe, are a combination of things. Your speed to/from your isp, your isp's pipeline to the net, and the pipeline to the servers that the website is on. Net congestion will really slow things down.

The rates shown at connection with a dialup modem is just that. What you connected at. Line noise will slow down your connection automatically and you won't know it, other than a slowdown in how fast/slow sites load... You'll probably blame it on net congestion anyway. I have yet to see a connection rate indicator change after the first connect rate is displayed. However, unless you have a perfect phone line, the rate does change.

The higher than expected speeds are probably a burst rate which is not a good indicator of the actual line speed. My ADSL connection is rated at 768 Kbps according to my phone company. My ISP says it's like having 1/2 a T1.

This whole topic got me thinking, so have been doing a bit of reading.

Turns out the incredible speeds I've been getting is probably due to two things. The cache on my machine and the proxy server my ISP uses.

Whatever the speed is, I've downloaded IE5.0 in minutes instead of hours, so I'm happy.

Thumbs down

The only thing is most servers can't go as fast as my cable modem so some sites are slow.
Downloads are superquick though.
