Moving to Illinois

I accepted a promotion and relocation at work and will be moving to Southern Illinois. Some people are like why the hell would you want to go there, but I really it (at least what I have seen). Anybody on here live in the Effingham/Charleston/Greenup/Newton area? I am just looking for some general feedback or anything about the area. I have lived on the east coast my whole life and I think this will be a nice change for me and its hard to turn down a promotion in this economic climate. promotion=more toys!

Thanks Guys

Cost of living should be quite a bit lower... just a guess though. Could be a really good move for you if you get a raise and the cost of living is really lower. Good luck.

im directly over on 70, almost to st. louis.

the last time i was in effingham, it seemed like a ghost town (10 years).

i hope it has built up a little more since then.

I will tell ya what---when I was officiating colege hoops and baseball, I had to drive through that part of Illinois. I taught for a while in a very rural area of Ohio---I thought that I had seen large farms. The farms in Illinios dwarfed the ones here in the Buckeye state---they were the size of townships...immense.

Thanks. I will be moving out at the end of March.

Effingham isn't that small, not a metropolis, but it has everything I need and seems to be filled with good people.

I would go for a place next to one of the lakes if possible. Illinois has been closing some of the state parks due to budget problems, so some areas might be a little slow. Click on the parks button on the right for a breakdown of the area. Effingham is on the north border of the southern zone.

Im from the carlyle area, which is a bit south west of effingham but most of the small towns in the area are good places with good people onlything i dont care for is they are usually gossip towns where everyone is in everyone elses business

Yeah my boss ran the plant in Greenup back in the late 90's and he shared that with me, but that is the small town way I guess. I am looking forward to getting out there though, change of scenery and a whole lot less people!

I'm about an hour and half NW of effingham
I've only been to effingham a few times and that was about 10 yrs ago...didn't seem like too bad of a place

I used to live less than an hour east of charleston. But we moved to a town between jacksonville and springfield. I like it better over in western illinois.

Good luck with the move. I use to work with some people that came down to West TN from there and they wish they could have gone back but the comapny we worked for shut down the factory up there.
