Who Has The Best BBQ????
After attempting to find BBQ is each of the 38 states I've been in, I found a couple of basic things...
1.) Great pork BBQ is the best, no offense to the Texas contingent, I've had them all!
2.) The absolute best pork BBQ comes from Stamey's, on High Point Road in Greensboro, NC.
Being from and living in Virginia, we of course have plenty of very good pork BBQ in our own state, usually in the most out-of-the-way little places, of course. We do a fine job of "pig pickn's", etc.
But for my money, the absolute best BBQ (with sauce only on the side, like any true 'Q-lover, as was mentioned by someone else in this thread) is at Stamey's.
Enjoy,

If it ain't pork, it ain't BBQ!!
Hey Shifter, if you want something simple but really good, there is this stuff called Black Magic which is a rub seasoning that is great on pork ribs. It looks like ashes, but has an awesome flavor!!
Jack Dempseys in a little hick town called Ty Ty Georgia has the best BBQ. (He is featured in the Jack Daniels book of BBQ) It is a really small town near where I grew up in GA. There is nothing in Atlanta to compare.....
Also, in South Georgia we have those vinegar and tomato based sauces, but for those that really want to kick up the BBQ a notch, grab the bottle with the yellowish brown BBQ sauce. It is a mustard based sauce and has more bite to it.

I didn"t read this until today, but wanted Indigo to know Brisket does not have bones, but the cooking of ten to twelve hours with Oak is also good. I have lived in KC too. Place I remember is long gone.
Will agree that Texas still has the BEST!
Mumbly forgot to mention he use to have a pit that could have been taken to rallies. Bet he wishes he still had it.
See everyone in Austin next weekend.

The best BBQ (IMHO) is cooked by my Father.
Medium sized pig slow cooked over oak wood cinders (I've done it myself a few times, so I know how long it takes) and topped with his own pepper (black and/or red), tomato and vinegar based sauce. POPS IS DA MAN!
By the way, he lives in SC.

DAY-UM
That brisket looks gooooood.
Down in the South I like Whitt's, Famous Dave's and Dreamland.
If you're ever in Paducah, KY stop by Backwoods BBQ and Starnes BBQ.
The Kountry Kastle is a good place to eat too.

Kansas City, American Royal BBQ anyone? Not one BBQ restaraunt will beat out the best competition at this annual event.
And for the love of all things holy, when visiting KC...avoid the "nostalgic" temptation of KC Masterpiece. Regardless of their famous sauce and excellent marketing, the actual food is tolerable at best. There is no alternative for the original Arthur Bryant's or Jack Stack BBQ restararaunts.

A chili dog, onion rings and a frosted mug....
The t***y bar that used to be adjacent to it was always a plus too.
mmm pork loin
take whole pork loin cut in half
marinate 24 hrs in fridge in vacuumed bag works best
freeze forget about it for 2 weeks thaw
bbq on med heat for 90 mins wrapped in foil
I use store bought teriaki and add little fresh ground dried jalepeno to
give it a little zip
no need for a knife tender and tasty

I'm going to have to throw in a nod for Gates in KC. Was in town for business, wasn't all that hungry at the time. Guys in front of me ordered a mixed plate, ribs, brisket, etc, etc. HUGE plate.
I ate the whole freaking thing. Slept for 12 hours after...
I'm going home, throwing a few angus t-bones on the grill...

Coopers in Llano fugging rocks! The fact that you walk up to the pit and select the cut of meat you want, not what some min. wage punk at a commercial joint wants to serve you, is what takes this place over the top.

The food is top notch!
