Angry home computer and f150 online

This seems to happen every nite and it is getting on my nerves! I will be on the message boards, scrolling up the list when everything locks up. The mouse arrow doesn't move, and I can't click on anything to get it going again, and I end up turning my computer off and having to start all over. This has yet to happen on other sites I visit. Only here, what gives? I am using aol 5.0, with a Pentium II Gateway computer. I defragment and use other clean-up utilities weekly. I'm not very computer literate, but would like to make it stop locking up. Any help appreciated, thanks.

1) Hit CRL & ALT & DEL then look and at what else you have running.
If you have 32mb ram, it better not be much. 64 is better and adequite(too early to spell) in most cases. I could have 5 0r 6 windows open with 64mb but ICQ would sometimes put me 'over the edge'
2) click on something you are not using and hit 'End Task' this will free up some resources with out having to reboot.
Some threads here have a lot of pics that are not 'reduced'. I have locked up mine before clicking on a thread that have too many pics.

AOL itself is a memory hog. . . It doesn't surprise me.

The others are on the right track. It definitely sounds like you're running low on resources. It's worse with Win 95. I hope you're running Win 98.

If you do a ton of surfing, opening and closing browser windows, you can run low on resources fairly fast. You will need to reboot your computer to free up the resources.

In addition to the other suggestions listed above, try this: go to Tools, then Internet Options, then in the Temporary Internet Files box hit the Delete Files button. This should clear out a lot of stored-up stuff. Of course, you have to do this before the computer locks up for good. The Control-Alt-Delete routine works sometimes during a lockup, but not always. You might want to bump up your RAM to 128Meg too

If you are running Windows 98 there is a away to fre up resources at startup. Win 98 has a lot running in the back ground that can be shut down. If you are running Win 98 and want more info let me know.

IMHO, I would get rid of AOL. It is an extremely bloated application hogging a lot of your memory, and do you enjoy spending $21.95 a month? You have no slouch of a computer. My suggestion, go with a local ISP (which may be around $13 bucks a month) and use Windows dial up connection. You can still use AOL Instant messenger to chat. You are only making Steve Case richer, and yourself more aggravated.

Yea, I know aol is not the friendliest internet source for the computer, but I guess it's what I'm used to. I did try a local provider for a month, but had email difficulties, and seemed to be alot more hassle. I am running windows 98 with 64mb ram, with almost 64% of my hard drive available. I may attribute the problem to online traffic. Even control, alt delete wouldn't clear it's head sometimes. I did usse the tools to clear the old internet files, thanks to marv1. I just wanted to see if it was just me or if anyone else had the problem. Hasn't happened yet tonite, (knock, knock) Thanks for the suggestions.

You may want to turn on your Resource Meter. That will give you an idea of how soon you will have to reboot your computer.

To get to the Resource Meter: Start, Programs, Accessories, System Tools, Resource Meter.

Question

Dennis, I turned on the resource meter, but I don't know what it is telling me. Right at the moment, it says: system:68% User68%: GDI 81%. What do these numbers mean? I assume the system and user percentages are telling me something about how much of a load the computer is running, but what is the GDI? Thank you for your input.

One more thing to try. . . Windows is absolutely horrible at managing its Virtual Memory. Go to System in the Control Panel. On the Performance Tab, you will find the Virtual Memory Button. Click on it, and tell it you want to specify the swap file size. Make the min and the max the same. 128 MB should be enough for you, but if you want to make it 256, go ahead. Just make sure the sizes are the same, this way Windows won't waste any resources managing the size of the swap file. Don't be scared by any dialogs that say your machine might be trashed. Reboot, and hopefully your machine will perform better when it is throttled. The next best suggestion would be to buy another 64 MB of RAM.

dlb is right on the money! you might also go into your msconfig and shut down some stuff. 68% user resourses is a little low but normal for Win 98 until you tweak a bit. I have got mine up to 80%. For a comparison Win 95 ran with 85 to 90% user resourses but WIn 98 has all kinds of crap that runs behind the scenes that is not needed. If you need some help E-mail me a cab@pdnt.com.
