Exclamation child booster seats for f150 ext cab???

Hey folks -

Anyone know of a good kids booster seat that fits in a 97' F150 Ext. Cab? A number don't seem to fit because of the smallish bench seat.

Thx

Ed

Thumbs up

Your in luck, I just happen to be a certified child safety seat technician. If you are looking for a booster seat DO NOT get the one that has a shield in front, they're not worth throwing away. There are several different companies that make qaulity seats but the main thing to remember is to get one that first, fits your child, and then fits your truck. Find a high-back booster, another name for it is a belt positioning booster. It positions the shoulder belt off the neck and over the shoulder. It looks like a bucket seat only smaller scale. If your child is under 40 pounds get one that has a five point harness and once the child reaches 40 pounds, you can take off the harness and then use the regular lap shoulder belt. It is recommended that children stay it a booster seat until they are about 80 pounds due to the fact that seat belts are made for adults and not kids. Be absolutely sure that the seat is installed properly, this is the biggest problem I find when I check car seats. If I can help any more just knock.

Welcome edying, hope to see more of you in the future. Good question for your first post, re: most important "cargo".

In my signature is what I use for my 4 year old and my 15 month old. It is a clickable link.

I wish there were more people like Smokey, in NJ the NTHSA has only 1 person listed with that qualification (last I looked).
If you think about it, shouldn't every adult license driver with a child under 80lbs be certified for use of child safety seats? Are there more drivers with blood alcohol content of .08 on the road or drivers with children under 80lbs out there? What are DMV admin. people thinking when they create manuals and written drivers test that contain 20-30% of the questions about alcohol and none one child/passenger safety?

Thanks for the replies guys. MTKNEE - any tips for the century next step in the back seat? It seems that no matter what I do, I can't get the seat to the point where it doesn't move significantly (front and back). The top doesn't move, but the base moves like crazy.

Maybe its just me, but it seems that its design that when used as a front facing seat, the connector for the seat belt is in front of the truck's seat belt connector. Smokey, any comments on this area...

argg.....

Thanks

Ed

edying,
Where on the bench are you placing the car seat? I have them directly behind the front passenger seat and the driver's seat. My son's seat is used as a booster, my daughter's is setup as a baby (>20#-<40#) seat.

Century includes a tether kit you can install, either above or below the seat. Ford will give you a free tether kit for the asking. They told me when I got them, that starting in June 2000, Ford dealers will start to install the tether kits for free too. Unfortunately, Century's kit and the Ford kit are not compatable with each other (tether and anchor). No matter what, you have to remove part of the bench seat to install the kit.

I believe in Sept 2000 (or 2001), the NHTSA is requiring ALL vehicles to have tether anchors. Some classes of vehicles are already required to have them. Here is a link to the NHTSA child passenger website pages. Best of luck.

Unhappy

I seem to be having the same problem, installing an infant seat in the back of my
supercab. The problem lies in the fact that there is too much space between the seat and
the belt latch, causing play back and forth
on that side of the infant seat.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

If you don't feel comfortable with your set up, talk with your dealer's service personnel. If you don't seem confident with their answer, talk with you local or state/prov police. They should be able to help or point you in the right direction for help. If you belong to a motor Club like AAA/CAA give them a call and make an appointment to talk their specialist, with your truck on site.

Remember, this is your most precious cargo, don't stop asking questions until you have the RIGHT answers.

Sorry it took a while to get back to you I've been out of town. mtknee sure gave some good advice. I am not familiar with that particular seat and it is hard to figure it out from this end without knowing all the particulars. It sounds like you have a convertable or toddler seat. If you can, give me somemore info about it. Also how much does your child weigh? But the best thing one can do is just what mtknee suggested, find a certified child safety seat technician in your area to actually look at what problems you are having. Contact you local police/sheriff's dept or CHP if that doesn't work try the local health dept. or any seatbelt coalition that may be active in your area. I'll be gla dto do what I can from here.
