Hey Stevo,
Seems your not the only one with that opinion of the new chat room set up. While by no means official, I have not heard one good comment about the change. Our webmaster says he made the change for the sake of bandwidth. I am not real sure what that means ,so, I am In no position to judge...
I also would like to have the old room back if it were possible.
Some of us have been using the Michigan Ford truck chat site as a alternate to the "new" room. As a resident member of the Michigan site I'd like to welcome 1 and all .... http://mercury.beseen.com/chat/rooms/w/7552

Red, don't forget the rules:
1) Do NOT forget the password you made up to get in. I CAN NOT get it for you.
2) Be nice.
We have Ford wallpaper and you can have your pic above your name. Everyone who comes in and says hello gets handed a beer. Beat that!

I have to agree with Redwing and Steveo. As a regular user of the chat room on this site I do not like the format, others I have chatted with are not happy with it either. Without color it is difficult to keep things sorted out, there may be more than one conversation at a time going on, with one color, it gets confusing. I also can't access it from work, so off to Andi's chat room I'll go.
It does have some nice features though; faster, audio alerts, PM rooms, profiles, ringing chatters. Still learning how to use some features.
I can understand the webmaster's concern for saving bandwidth. This is a privately owned site and he does listen and respond to his users, so hopefully he will find an improved chat room in the future. We'll just have to live with it till that day comes. He spends a lot of his own time and money on our 'playground', so for now D.A.W.S.

I'm a regular chatter as well (just not as often as those that 'live' there - RW, MtK).
The ability to use color helped sort out all the various conversations going on. However, the previous chat room was slow, cumbersome and anyone could use anyone else's 'handle'.
The current room is much faster - too fast to keep up sometimes (some folks just can't be pleased). From what I read on the sidebar as you're logging into the chat room we will soon need to register to use the chat room, much the same as we do here on the boards. I like that idea since, with registration, you'll know that I am me and ATST is ATST. The other benefit is that our friends the 'Chevy Lovers' might be a bit dissuaded from annoying us.
If this were a perfect world the current room would include color and or font choices.

I just hate the idea that I can't get it to work from behind a firewall. I am at work when I want to use it so I guess that I am going elsewhere to chat, the othere site is awesome. This site is still the best out there.......

Steveo - the fact that you can't access the chat room from behind a firewall is due to your system administrator(s) setting it up that way. I'm having the same issues accessing my Excite.com email account (thanks to the lovely viruses of late).
Is it a crime to bribe a system administrator?

Tom, speaking as an admin myself, the answer is no. And it's encouraged!

Personally, I prefer an irc chat server where you can use either mIRC or a java client. irc is a lot better for chatting. Members can do several things, including having private chats, forming their own temporary chat rooms (with various privacy levels), and share files.
mIRC loads really fast. It also allows the registration of nicks thru password protection (must be done thru the java client). mIRC is easily setup to enter your password automatically.

Steveo - try and find out of your network is behind a firewall for the internet. If so, try and get the IP address for the firewall and go into your browser settings and enter the firewall IP address. In Netscape goto the prefrences then Advanced then Proxies and enter it under HTTP. In IE goto Internet Options and go under Connections and I beleive its under LAN settings. I never use IE so I'm not too sure. Now, next step is send me an envelope stuffed ful of cash
