I would seriously take a look at Consumer Reports long term outlook of the F150. . . It is Above Average in reliablity and far from a pile of junk. Also, look at the XLT package. . . In no other full size truck are you going to get that value for the money. And one more rant. . . What is up with those extra door handles on the Tundra's extended cab rear doors? They look ridiculous. The F150's are out of site, and, IMHO, are ergonomically in a better position.

Take a look at the rear axle on the Tundra, it is about half the size of the F150 axle.
This would be ok if your just using it as a daily driver. I wouldn't want to work with it or tow anything very heavy with it.

Hey onemilmhz,

Next tiem you go to a toyota dealership, try to open the rear door first, and ask why it won't open when you pull the handle. Then ask the dealer to make sure the doors aren't locked. Then ask again why it won't open. Ask why you cannot get a v8 in the single cab also. But remember, imitation is the best (good atleast) compliment.

I just sold my 2000 Tundra Lmtd. I think the build quality is excellent. The ride...well..If you like a Camry, you will like the Tundra. I personally like a truck to ride like a truck, and the Tundra is not even close to the size of an F-150. I have had 2 97 F-150's both of them 4x4 ORP's and a 2000 Tundra. I sold it and purchased a 99 F-150. I just like the looks of the Ford better and I like the fact that it is much larger. The back seats in the Tundra are useless.

Well the Tundra has alot of the Ford look to it so thiers a chance the Tundra will have the door crack as well. So get the Ford and you have a full size truck instead of almost full size truck and the money you save you can use for mods on your Ford.

Preserve your reputation and buy a Ford F150. Just try to picture yourself on your death bed wondering why in the year 2000 you made the mistake an bought a Tundra instead of an F150. Only you know what you should do to prevent that dreadful situation.

Thumbs up

I have to add to this post. I currently have a 98 F150 with the 5.4 and 4WD. Love the power and the room but I have had my share of problems. I went through the FQR for piston slap and although Ford was great about the service, it makes me wonder about this motor when I'm 10 years down the road.

Besides the motor, I have the door cracks and have had to have the door switches replaced because the "door ajar" light would stay on. Granted, some minor stuff but with all the trucks they build, Ford should have had some of this sorted out by now.

Previous to the F150, I had a "wimpy" Toyota SR5 with the old 3.0 V6. Now, I know I'm not talking apples to apples, but that was a great truck. I put over 90K on it in 6 years and it never drank a drop of oil, never had anything break, and besides changing the timing belt at 60K, never even visited the shop. It was never big on power, but let me tell you, that truck WORKED. I put it through hell and the day I sold it everything was as tight as the day I bought it.

What I'm getting at is that although Ford makes a hell of a truck in the F150, Toyota makes a hell of a PRODUCT and the Tundra is definatly worth a look. Reliability and Resale are what matter most when the last loan payment goes in.

Of course, I hope the F150 turns me to a loyal Ford guy!!!

Just my $.02

Tundras have a great V8 and Toyotas have an excellent reputation for quality, in general, that's true. But consider these Tundra downsides:

Smallest back seat of all full-sized pickups.
Shallowest bed by far (measure a couple; you'll be surprised).
No limited-slip differential available (forget that in Canada!).
Impossible-to-find manual transmissions and 2-wheel-drive extended cabs.
I think V6 extended cabs don't exist.

In the end, nothing's perfect. The Tundra is made in North America just like the F-150. It's a good truck. Just buy the best truck for your needs and wants and to heck with everybody else. Right?

My third F-series: '73 F-100 Custom 240-cube 3-speed, '98 F-150 XL-SC 4.2 5-speed, and '00 F-150 XLT-SC 4.2 5-speed. GREAT trucks!
