After much of an onslaught of looking and reading... I found exactly what I was looking for...

I got a Gerber EZ-Out DPSF Black blade.

Here's the same knife, but rather a close up, but has a "limited edition" engraving on it...

As you can see it's sporting a Crucible S30V blade, and a Polycarbonate handle. I even got a great deal on it, AND it's USA made. In fact, I can't believe how good of a deal I got... because the blade alone is worth a lot, because it's used in some of their other more expensive knives, sporting that same S30V DPSF blade.

I can't wait to use it...

Actually, as a side note... that blade is made only 45 minutes away from me, at the Crucible Materials Corporation... nothing like buying something made in the USA, but right from my own backyard!

Several good points here. +1 on the skipping the Tanto. Look great new, fuggetaboutit trying to recapture the edge on resharpening.

Check out Emerson knives. http://emersonknives.com/ekTheKnives_Tact.php Several great options, 1/2 serrated or plain, black or brushed. Check out the "Wave" feature which opens the knife as you pull it out of your pocket.

Knife is a personal choice, what you like & works for you, the next guy will trash talk & hate it.

Yeah, I didn't think about the sharpening bit on a Tanto blade, even though it looks cool, it's not practical.

Those Emerson knives seem pretty dang sharp... no pun intended.

I went through probably 300+ knives... maybe more if my memory serves me right, and this one came up to be the right one for me.

I was kind of hoping it would've came today, but it looks like tomorrow it should be at my doorstep.

I gotta get the sharpener for it; as I don't know if it comes with a sharpener or not. I'm just going to wait to get it, and see if it does. If not, I'm going to buy like 2 or 3 of these to have on hand... especially since they are rather cheap.

Anyone have any other ideas on how to keep the blade sharp? And yes, I know... don't use the knife as a screw driver, chisel, etc... I'm not a master knife sharpener... obviously. I don't want to wreck this knife because it was hard to find. Like I read tons of stuff online... but it all seems rather complicated, from doing 15 degree angles to 30 degree angles, etc. What angle do I sharpen this knife at?

I give up on sharpening systems a long time ago. I only use a strop with sandpaper and buffing compound. That works best for me.

Geee... I don't know if I could trust myself...

My question is... would it be good to practice on a cheap knife? Like dull it out, and then practice sharpening it a few times until I get a solid base on what I'm doing?

I really don't want to screw it up, then have to pay someone $20 or more to sharpen it... maybe after 5 years, that's different... but I don't want to screw it up so soon.

Also, what would be a good a good sandpaper and buffing compound? How do I "buff" a knife? Remember this is a Crucible S30V blade... as I'm not sure if it depends on which alloy it would depend on.

I know I can't do the serrations, those are pretty much for professionals only.

Boy... I'm still anxious to get it... as I was hoping to get it today, but it looks like tomorrow. Gotta love the USPS...

Though it won't work on the serrated, don't have an answer for that.

Cool video!!

Well, I got my knife today... and man it is SHARP!

Plus I like it a lot... and it is rugged!

Now I gotta learn how to sharpen properly... I guess I'll go out this week and buy a good strop and stone. I'll take a peak at Gander mountain as I think I saw some there.

I'll post a picture later..

As an update...

This knife is insane!

I've sharpened it once, and after cutting 500+ wires and doing various other tasks, the knife still sharp enough to slice paper like a razor.

I do highly recommend it for anyone that needs a knife with a heavy duty character.

Its one sickkkk knife!

My coworker has a Kershaw Junkyard Dog II and he was cutting a plastic wall plate and the tip broke. I know it's a Sandvik 13C26 blade, but I've heard CPM-S30V being just as brittle.

I don't think it has to do with manufacturer, it's just the properties of the metal.

true that, it was a gerber black that was really big but the blade seemed really really really light.

Well, I've purchased a number of Gerber knives... I even have two of the EZ-Out DPSF... but the ones I have in my collection are:

Gerber EZ-Out DPSF - S30V Blade - Black:

Gerber EZ-Out Skeleton - 425 Blade - Silver:

Gerber Hinderer CLS - 440a Blade - Black:

I just ordered a Presto 3.5... I can't wait to get it.

Gerber Presto 3.5 Combo with F.A.S.T. - Silver:

My next knife will most likely be a Tanto... and I'm looking at finishing my Gerber collection up with a Torch II Tanto G10...

I'm in the process of making a nice display case for them out of wood and glass so I can hang it up on my wall for display!
