Individual Dental Insurance?
Individual Dental Insurance?
I need dental insurance but my employer doesn't provide it. I'm having problems and I just can't afford to get them fixed. It's becoming a real problem. Does anyone have an individual dental plan that they get outside of their work?
Not sure about the states, but I have looked into it here in Canada and I am better off just paying the dentist. The freaking premiums on dental insurance for an individual are insane and they only cover portions of everything, so I might as well just fork it over directly to the dentist when required. If you have a family they are worth the money though.
It will be extremely difficult to find individual coverage that you can afford. They assume that you are looking for insurance because you have a problem, so they will make you pay for a pretty good waiting period before you can be covered. Your best bet is to see if your employer will sign up for group coverage with an insurance company and let the employees pay for it by payroll deduction. Just those that want it. They can do it through a 125K plan so that you use pretax dollars.

Anyways, my work doesn't cover dental - we go through Aflac which is pretty affordable - something like $30 /month. Don't know if you've thought of that or not

Yeah I think I'm going to have to talk to my boss. See what we can come up with. The premiums are going to be nothing compared to the amount I'll pay at the dentist. At around $1800 for a root canal, post and crown, needing multiple of those, plus other fillings, it's going to get costly. I've been blessed with having weak teeth run in my family. Yay me.
Porkchop, you joined in August of 04 and have 24 posts. You don't expect people to take you serious do you. Should I feel honored that you took the time to post in my thread, even though you had nothing useful to contribute? By the way, if you frequent the Care and Detailing section, you'll find that I've contributed quite a bit and have asked for very little. My skills and knowledge just don't extend far enough into other areas to be of much help to others so I stick to what I know.

Gawd, what a EDITED.......any way I could use dental insurance as well. Being self-employed visits to the dentist care really take a bite out of my check book, no pun intended.

One thing to remember too is the wait period - my coworker had to wait 6 months (I think it was) before any major operation (he needed a root canal and 2 teeth surgically removed). It probably varies from company to company - just something else to consider if you indeed need something done "now"
I am an Aflac agent, and I provide personal dental plans in Virginia and Tennessee.
We do not care about conditions that you already have, however, as mentioned, there are waiting periods because some people buy a policy, get work done and then dump it. For extractions, I believe that you have to have the policy for 6 months before we cover them. Different procedures require different waiting periods, and we do provide benefits for two cleanings/checkups a year.
For an adult between 18-49 single coverage, the policy prices are these:
Basic $30.80
Standard $39.90
Premier $48.90
All of those prices are per month in TN. They would be cheaper if it was through an employer.
The higher your premium, the more that we pay per procedure.
If you are going to use the policy, then it is most definitely worth getting one. Root canals are costly, and depending on what you are charged, you could actually make money on them if we paid mroe than you were charged.
Aflac dental is the only Aflac plan that can give you an insurance card, that way you can be seen without paying as much up front.
I recommend finding a local Aflac provider (or coming to SWVA or NETN and seeing me
) and seeing what they can do for you, go over what the plans would pay for what procedures in your state and go from there, they can be very affordable and they can hit the spot when using them.
Bluejay, you are right, going through payroll deduction with an employer group policy, we can pre-tax the plans, but unless your employer offers it and wants to set up a cafeteria plan, there's no way to do that. It is cheaper on you that way, too.
