Post Do you tow horses?

I just bought a 2-horse aluminum trailer. It' got me thinking about other mods. I'd like input from those of you with experience or other knowledge.

1. The trailer's about 9 ft tall. Should I have one of those wing things for the cab?

2. What's a safe max speed for it? (4 to 5000lbs)

3. Load equalizing hitch?

Thumbs up

When I tow, I've got an electric brake for the trailer. The control box is put near the cubby hole in my truck. STOPPING that rig is very important!!! I haven't used a load equallizing hitch but w/as much weight as your pulling w/that 4.6, I think you should look into one. Safe speed?? How ever fast you can go and still safly stop. If you're transmission can't hold a gear and starts seraching/hunting then slow it down. This will probably show up more in hilly terrain. Make sure you're mirrors are adjusted so you see the trailer well. And take wide turns!!!

Personally, I think that 4.6 is gonna be struggling and that you should be pulling w/a F250 at least. But that's just my opinion. The 4.6 is a tough engine, I used to have one and it pulled my trailer just fine. My F250 just pulls it sooooo much better Let us know how it does.

You will not have any problems at all. The posted speed limit is what I run and a little over on the interstate. I don't think you will need a weight distributing hitch. I used to tow a 2 horse bumper pull with a Ext Cab 4x4 Ranger and had no problems at all. I now have a gooseneck. I highly recommend gooseneck trailers, it is a different world. Like Tina said get a brake box, and allow plenty of space to stop, but you will not have a problem towing. My rig completely loaded weighed in a 13,060lbs the last time that I weighed it and it drives and handles like a dream. You also don't need one of those wings, unless you really want it, I don't think it would look good on your truck. Also the 4.6 will do fine, I know a couple of people who tow with them and they are happy with them.
