I saw this on Bloomberg.com. Wanted to cut-n-paste an excerpt.

“Everyone wants to save auto manufacturers but no matter how much government aid we give to the Big Three automakers, they can’t survive if consumers don’t start buying cars,” said Senator Barbara Mikulski, a Maryland Democrat who sponsored the amendment. “We can help by getting the consumer into the showroom.”

Her amendment would provide tax breaks to those who purchase new cars and light trucks between Nov. 12, 2008, and the end of this year that cost less than $49,500. Families earning more than $250,000 wouldn’t be eligible for the break. Mikulski estimated the amendment would save car buyers $1,500 on a $25,000 purchase.


Well, if OUR tax money is going to be spent anyway, might be nice to get some of it back for ourselves to use !

 

Im doing my part to stimulate the auto industry i pick up my 09fx4 tonight at 5.

I agree though it would be nice to get some of our money back.

 

While I would benefit from that I don't think it's wise to for the U.S. to protect our manufacturers like that. U.S. conservatives already rail about other countries subsidies and protectionistic practices when, in the last few decades, the U.S. has been one othe most protectionistic nations of all the developed countries.

But if Uncle Sam wants to give me another tax break, I will not look the other way.:o
