The Yuppy Brain
Now I don't mean to go off on a rant here, but.................It never ceases to amaze me how the yuppy mind comprehends SUV's. I'm not talking about true SUV enthusiasts, just those that buy em for status and look down on truck owners. These are the people who's idea of off roading is circling a mall parking lot, looking for the closest space. They want an Explorer, but wouldn't be caught dead in a Ranger. Love an Expedition, but wouldn't want to be seen by the neighbors driving an F-150. Can't wait to be the first on the block to get the new Excursion, but would rather be shot than be seen in a SuperDuty. You get the picture. Don't these people realize that their precious SUV's are merely a truck with a permanent cap and an extra row of seating? If most of them were placed in the driver's seat of a truck and not allowed to look back, they wouldn't know the difference. A friend of mine was interested in a new Harley F150, but since him and his girlfriend have moved to an upscale neighborhood, she has convinced him an extended cab truck is not "practical", and has talked him into getting a more expensive Explorer. What's more practical than a vehicle that can seat six, has a very high crash rating, rides like dream, can haul anything home you like, and can be had with a high output V8 for less money? My buddy is whipped and this "Keeping up with the Jones'" mentality is making me ill. Of course, that's just my opinion, and I could be wrong...........

Your buddy needs to get his ***** back from that bi@th!
Nothing pleases me more than to see those things all scratched from the mechanical cars washes (because yuppies don't wash them themselves) and dented from the parking lots (because they either can't park or see around them well enough to drive them)
He should also note the # of kids hit by school busses because they can't be seen that close to the vehical and I suspect that # will soon be matched by the SUV's. Remember the big family car used to be the station wagon? Well you can SEE around one of those! And The supercab has more visability than a SUV which is really a Mini bus.
Try hauling plywood AND six people in a SUV!
My Truck is our 'good car' and the vehical we take to weddings funerals and church ect. If someone DARE say it isn't appropriate..... heaven help them.

If I moved into that neighborhood with that kind of girl, I'd get my 1966 beat-up, poorly primed, beginning to rust yet again, plywood for a bed, with that weeks trash in it - chevrolet c/10 pickup that runs like a charm that doesn't have a muffler, and park it where everyone could see it. Don't forget the midnight runs to the grocery store. My mom asked how come I don't have a muffler for it and I said they quit making mufflers for it back in '80. Her hillbilly boyfriend just erupted in laughter. She beleived me though, and I saved $25.
$10K for a permenant cap and seat?
I'll pass.
We have TONS of ppl at my sons school that drive them and 90% of them are classic cases of yuppie SUVs.
They look at my wife funny when she pulls up in my F150 (on the rare occasions she drives it) while they are crusing in there Suburbans and Excursions etc.

If I'm not mistaken, the legal title description for the Explorer is "wagon". Yeah, that's cool. Does anyone remember the 70's? Can I get it in plastic woodgrain trim please? How soon they forget. I believe a wise man once said "Those who do not learn from mistakes of the past are bound to repeat them."

OK guys, I must step in at this point and defend the Explorer a little. The one I have is a blast to drive and is very well built. Just like the F-150. I do things with mine to **** of the yuppies that have them. Such as, haul stuff sticking out of the rear tailgate glass and I installed a greasy trailer hitch ball as soon as I got it. I love mine and I am proud to own this Ranger based SUV as opposed to another beige Camry.
I also think that the real yuppies are driving Honda CRX's and RAV4's and those stupid Mercedes ML's. The Explorer has taken a step down on the yuppie food chain. And now we have a $50,000 BMW X5 to make it worse.
However, if I had to liquidate down to one car tomorrow, the F-150 would be the only one to stay.

I have to agree about the typical Yuppie housewife/soccer mom driving around in a HUGE SUV for such mundane chores as running to the store for a carton of milk or dropping off a couple kids at school. Most of the time the capabilities of a 4WD SUV are totally wasted, except for maybe a couple times a year when it snows bad enought to warrant the 4WD, etc. It seems like it's a total status symbol and a tremendous waste of $$$ and resources. Stick to four door sedans or something like a Subaru Outback if you occasionally need the 4WD.
I guess what I really find amusing is the number of yuppies willing to part with $40,000+ to drive ANY four-door sedan (Mercedes, BMW, Lexus, etc.) and think their 4door sedan is cool. Now a coupe is another thing, but the day I have a four door sedan is the day they can cart me off to the old folks home.
Also get peeved at the whining yuppies with four door sedans who complain about the size of the full-size trucks and SUVs being hazardous to their small vehicles in an accident. WEll, DUHHHHHHHHH, why do you think we buy a full-size truck or SUV...it's cuz there are so many morons out there driving around like idiots and when they hit me, I don't want it to be ME that's dead.
Sorry...I get carried away sometimes.

This topic is so true that it really isn't funny, its sad. I work in Plano, Texas "All American City" and its the SUV capital of the world. The Subrban is the most popular vehicle and now so is the Excursion(land barge). Basically Plano is a suburb of Dallas(explins the Suburban thing) and the Suv is like a i got more money than you contest. It disgusts me. Now the one thing I son't understand is if a family consists of 4 people(the average around here) then why in God's name would you possibly need a Full size SUV?! And when did Sport and Utility become nearly extinct? Now all they are is abunch of station wagons built on truck frames. So glad I am no superficial.

Heh, I should chime in here. My mother just leased (back in September) a 2000 Explorer. Her aerostart died and they went shopping for a new vehicle. Of course, the windstar sucks, and being as we are Ford people, they decided to get an Explorer. Of course, she ended up with a 4x4, and I keep telling her I am going to go offroading in it. She gets darn near swearing when I say that and insists that her "car" will never go offroad. So I ask why she got the 4x4 and she said it was because it wasn't worth waiting (ordering) for a 2wd just to save a few thousand. Heh, I think that my mother has fallen into the trap... although if there was a 2wd on the lot (we only work through one dealership) than my father would have made her get that instead (he hates it and just wants the lease to come up). Next thing she gets is a car (my father will have his supercrew for work by then). So anyway, after all this rambling, I agree that this whole mentality sucks, but a portion of it is marketing. I mean, if the dealerships were pushing 2wd trucks, they would be everywhere, but as it is, you can only seem to find 4x4's (although I still don't agree with people buying Expiditions/Excursions if they don't REALLY need them). Heh, and me, who would love to be able to afford a 4x4 so I could go offroading.......

Yuppies
During the winter time here in quebec, and in a snow storm. You can count the Jeep cherokees in the ditch, one, two,...five, six LOL!!!
Those people think that having a 4x4, right away gives them the right to go fast during snow storms and get that go everywhere feeling? I agree that some SUVs are great. Having a 4x4 means, you should know how to drive one?
Anyway I won't get started on that issue but the one that bugs me alot is all that extra pollution! Those people should go and buy a high-class mini-van like the Grand Voyager etc.. (they do come in 4x4 versions). To me when I see a mom with kids getting groceries, I see wasted truck! And wasted fuel!
But we can't judge everyone we see with a SUV, because we don't know for sure if that person doesn't like off-roading?

WOW! Beat up the Yuppies (Young Upcomming Professional). Well, I have both and far from being a Yuppie. (BTW, I'm not offended). The reason we bought the Expedition is because of our love for our F150. We needed something that would cart around more people that the truck.
The "Yuppies" are the ones that have "upgraded" from the BMW 3 series to something the cannot manage (something bigger, like the Expedition). What really burns me is these people, not being able to manage the size of their vehicle, trying to use a phone at the same time and yes circling the mall for that parking space right up front!
I could go on forever!

What is this "snow" thing ya'll keep talking about?
Snow White,
I grew up in Richardson and can vouch for your opinion of Plano. Man is that place suburbia run amok or what? The parents are worried about their status while their kids are shooting heroin. What a messed up place.
