Post Summer Jobs

Hey guys, its that time of year again for me anyways. I have to start applying for sumer jobs, and I was just curious what kind of jobs you have had in the summer time while you were in college, or when you were in a similar situation.

1) I am thinking of working for the Alaska Railroad. Not the customer service dept. But the actual track labor dept. That fixes worn/uneven tracks in bear country. I really love adventures.

2) I almost went to the North Slope this year, but I might be helping my parents build 2 houses. Good pay, free room and board, delicious free food (world class chefs). 6 weeks, 12 hours/day, 7 days a week. Steak every Sunday. Maybe next year.

3) Thought about commercial fishing, but I do not know much about it, and I enjoy wasting my time with my fly rod. They say you really cannot go back to rod and reel fishing after commercial fishing.

4) Thought about the airport, worked there last year, but this is a bad year for the airlines, especially Alaska Airlines, and I do not want to see a crash.

Sorry for the long post, but I have not much more to do except look for a cool job. Thanks

my first summer I worked at a girl scout resident camp as a horseback instructor, second summer and this summer i'm working at PetSmart. during my 1st and 2nd winter breaks I worked at WorldCom (aka MCI-WorldCom).
I'm thinking about working for my horse trainer this summer. she'll pay more than Petsmart but my hours won't be guaranteed.

My summer job for 3 years was working at the county road commission. Mostly worked at road construction or filling potholes. I actually enjoyed the job. Got to drive around all day and be outside.

Cool

When I was in school, I worked for a construction company. We specialized in poured concrete foundations. The first two summers I was basically a laborer, but the third summer I obtained more responsibility and got to babysit other workers from time to time.

Hard, backbraking work (we used old alum. forms that weighed from 60 lbs to way over 170 lbs. - they wern't supposed to weigh this much but over time the concrete found it's way into the hollow areas) long hours, and usually broke a sweat before 7 am - but it was worth it. Now that I am in the "real world" I can look back, I see that it was the best job I've had. Don't know why, though. When we "got off early" it was an 8 hour day. Most days were 10-12, with the 16 hr day thrown in for fun. Ahhh, it was a special feeling to be on overtime by every Thursday around noon.

If I were you I'd choose an outdoorsey job. The railroad job sounds interesting, as does the north slope. I'd stay away from the fishing, though.

Have fun up there! My Aunt lives there in Eagle River, she likes it a lot. Someday I'l have to make the trip.

Take care!

Well, I'm in my senior year at High School and I currently work at a Harley Davidson shop. Down here that is the perfect summer job. All the good looking Harley Honeys come in wearing skimpy clothes to beat the heat. God bless America.

I am a sophomore in college, and I will probably have to take a class or 2 this summer. I want to graduate in about 2.5 more years. Degree is 5 years.

Anyways, I usually work for my dad, work for cocacola, and help a guy build engines for sprint cars.

I beg to differ on the commercial fishing, it's a great summer job. I started out one summer as an apprentice baiter.

I now have my license as a Master Baiter.

I used to work for a sign company in college (billboards, neon, box signs, etc.). Got to play with some cool toys, like boom trucks.

Tundra, you got to think what job is going to have the coolest toys to play with. I will have to say go with the railroad

Hey guys thanks for the responses. I think I am going to go with the railroad job. I really love the outdoors. One summer I had a $31.19 an hour job for planting trees! It was a federal job, so we milked it.

About the Lightning, a certain school in Alaska (UAA) had a catastrophic accident involving one of their climbing classes and to keep us from suing, they paid off my mother who took the class. Turns out the way they were teaching the class was almost completly wrong. They did not want to admit it, so everybody that survived had the opportunity to sue. Nobody actually took them to court, but we almost did. She cannot live her dream through now, which was to climb Denali (Mckinley). I admit it, it was a gift, but I would rather the accident never have happened. I think CNN was on top of the story.
