A/V Hookup...Will this work?

Hi all,

I have an audio question for hooking up between my TV and my all-in-one home theater system. The TV only has an Optical OUT for audio (toslink) while the all-in-one home theater has a Red/White RCA IN and also an Orange Digital Coaxial Audio IN. I have researched and found that they make a splitter/device that connects the toslink to the digital coax, so provided I purchase this splitter/device and a toslink and a digital coax, it should work.

However, for some reason in my collection of wires and cables, I have a toslink to 3.5mm mini plug. I found an adapter that is a female mini to the two rca males. Would this connection and setup work? The mini to rca route is the cheapest since the plug is like 3 bucks max, otherwise im buying the toslink, splitter, and digital coax.

I realize that I may loss the "digital" aspect of the audio, but am fine with that. Just would like to listen to the programs on TV a little bit louder and with the surround effect that the all-in-one gives me.

Thanks all.

The ONLY way you are going to get true surround sound (AC3 or DTS) with your current setup is to use an optical to coaxial converter such as:
http://www.cablestogo.com/product.as...3103&sku=40019

There is no such animal as a TOSLINK to 3.5mm -anything-.

If you wish to use a synthesized type of surround (not true 5.1, 6.1, or 7.1 decoding) like Pro Logic or Pro Logic II then you can utilize the red and white RCA outputs on your TV (monitor out or equivalent) to an open input on your receiver and set that input for Pro Logic or something similar. Although all 5 speakers should fire you are not getting the benefit of discreet AC3 or DTS decoding. As you said, this may not be all that important to you... just be aware that's all. If you have a digital cable box, or satellite, you should take the digital out, either optical (TOSLINK) or coaxial (orange RCA) from there. This will allow your HT receiver to decode the audio signal from your service provider and most likely the AC3 multichannel audio that is present on most of the movie channels, just like that on a DVD.

Hope this helps!

If you are speaking of a mini-TOSLINK form factor, then you are correct. Typically used in old Sony Minidisc players. This still wouldn't work for his purpose, anyway.

The generally accepted term for a 3.5mm "mini-plug" would be that of either a TRS or TS -analog- connection. With that in mind you can see where the problem would be. Perhaps I shouldn't assume that this was the type of cable he was speaking of, and if so I stand corrected. That being said, I haven't seen a Sony minidisc player in ages. -dude-

cheers
