I sure wish someone would let me know in what States it's ilegal to drive with your tailgate down. I do it all the time and I wouldn't want to get ticketed. That law just doesn't make sense to me. What else do they legislate in those States? I guess it's illegal to walk around with your fly open too. I can't see the crime in driving with your tailgate down as long as nothing is sticking out. When I do have something sticking out I put a big red flag on it so nobody runs into it.

(I'll bet those States sell alot more long beds.)

Raoul, now you've "opened a can of worms." I believe it IS illegal to go around with ones fly open. Reminds me of this creep at work who used to flash me. He would leave his zipper down all the time with a long shirt over it, (SAME shirt and pants EVERY day!) and when ever he was facing me, he would pull his shirt up! When confronted, he told the other forman that his zipper was broke and was told to have installed a min. of three saftey pins or be sent home! No lie!
As for tailgates, I've heard that, but don't know where it applys.

Question

Anyone ever been cited for driving
with your tailgate down? Doesn't seem
to bother the police around here (NC).

I've never heard of such a law. And living in AZ, I drive with mine down every now and then.

As far as tailgaters go, I tap the brakes 4/5 times to get them to back off. If they don't back off, I usually start reducing my speed first, and if that doesn't work...I mash the gas and run away from them.

With all the "road rage" killings going on, I just back off and let 'em by. Funny thing is I always seem to catch up with them somewhere along the way anyway.

I got flipped off for trying to tell a chevy truck to back off by tapping my brakes! go figure.
I hate people who speed through town but are a bunch of pokey puppies out on the highway. I also hate people who won't keep a consistent speed. I also hate people who pull out in front of me on the highway (on 4 lane, they just can't go to the empty lane) and when I go to pass them (going the speed limit) they all of a sudden floor it. You either floor it first or you wait till I pass you before you pull out on the highway.

Thumbs down

In my hometown everyone drives 20mph below/above the speed limit. Sometimes the people that **** me off, get to hear a real Ford. Funny never seem to have any Ford trucks **** me off.

hey ponysix i've got a better one for you. about 2 wks ago my son and i were coming home and a young fellow in a geo prism pulled out to cross our lane. i nailed the brakes and stopped just before t boning his car. guess what he did as he pulled away. yep there goes his finger. funny part was my son said "i bet if you didn't like this truck so much you would have run him over huh". after the finger i might have liked another chance.

I hate tailgaters, but now with my truck. I don't see them when they are really close. Once, with my 1979 Bronco, I just outright slamned on the brakes. The little Civic ***** almost ran into me, He swerved to miss me. After that I left my high-beams on and switched on my 4x 100 Watt off-road lights. I tailgated him for awhile, he tried slamning on the brakes too but I just kept on coming. I wanted to really run over him, I guess he figured out and floored it.

thats my little case of road rage

Usually when I'm tailgated, I ignore it for a few blocks. If people persist on hanging on to my bumper, I jam on the brakes for about one second, just enough to reduce my speed in half. Usually that wakes them up and they back off.

I'm sick of little kids, and little cars riding my @ss. I read somewhere that one guy got rearended by some little car, and got a trailer hitch impression smashed into his hood. All that happened to his F-150 is the trailer wiring harness got bumped out! Ha!

One time, I was tailgating really bad (when I was like 17), and the guy in front of me just stopped, and I mean he nailed his brakes!!!! I came within 2 inches of rear-ending him, luckily I was paying attention. I don't tailgate anymore!

What I usually do, when someone is trying to drive in the the bed off my truck on the highway, is downshift 2 gears on them. This is usually enough to lock up my wheels a little without the brake lights coming on. Thats what really gets 'em, a big stop with no brake lights. If you could only imagine their faces. After that, their is no problem.

Actually, last Friday, I had to make a long trip, so I put my tailgate down. A HP Man between Sherwood and Hicksville pulled beside me at the light and told me I had to put my tailgate up.

Question

Raoul,
>>>>When you talk about putting a red flag on something when it's sticking out. Are you talking about your truck bed or your fly?

I see that there are many others that hate tailgaters. When I had my Ranger, I would do a few things. My favorite thing to do was to slowly ease over and drop my right-hand wheels onto the shoulder....it tends to kick up all sorts of rocks and stuff onto the person behind me. Also makes them think you are drunk - and no one, not even some jerk tailgater, wants to follow a drunk.

Other tricks are to downshift a few gears, or just slow to rediculous speeds if in the city, or just slow enough to be annoying on the highway.

Now, with my F150, I won't pull ontot he gravel with it (don't want any paint chips) and it's an auto-shifter so I can't jump down a few gears. I can, however, slow down and become more annoying.

I also hate people who try to squeeze into my safety zone that I have left in front of me`. When I think someone who is passing me is gonna do it ( it's usually the jerk who has been on your bumper for a few miles) I simply cancel the overdrive and punch it as they pass and close up the hole.
