Post Compacts vs full-size mileage

How come the V-6 4.0l Ranger has comparable mileage to the V-6 4.2l F-150? I would imagine that the Ranger would get 22-24 mpg's due to its smaller engine and lighter body and smaller frontal area. But I hear reports of 16 mpg's for these little Ranger, what gives. Also on the Toyota Tacoma V-6's, getting lower mileage than Chevy V-8's.

V-8, who needs a stinkin' V-8? The question is, who wants a stinkin' V-8? Me!

I was going to buy a 4.0 Ranger but people told me that a full size had about the same milage. So I went with a F150 V6 and 3.08 gears, I got 20 to 22 MPG with this truck last summer. In the winter time I see a drop to 17 or even 15 MPG, maybe its the 4wd or poor fuel quality? Anyway I used to own a 1997 Ford Ranger Rebel (like a splash but a 4cy. 2WD) with this truck 100km = 17 liters of fuel. Now with my '97 V6 F150 100 km = 19 liters. WOW is all I can say, I don't know for sure about the 4.0 but the 4cy is about the same as the full size (it sounds stupid but trust me).

My first truck 83 F-150 with a 302/AOd got 6mpg before the rebuild and about 12 after, this 93 got 22 last summer and should get better, and my 89 gets 14 all the time. My dads98 chevy gets 21-22 with a v350/auto and our 96 suburban gets about 20 v350/auto. I can't say its bad, the tritons are supposed to get better than mine soooo...

My 4.0 Ranger w/5 speed got about 20 to 21 mpg, or 3 to 4 mpg better than my '99 4.2 auto XLT SC gets, and that little Ranger would run circles around my new truck. My dad has a 3.0 Ranger 5 speed, and it gets much better mileage than the 4.0 Ranger or any full size truck - 27 to 28 mpg mostly highway.

I had a 94 Ranger 3.0 V-6 auto that never got higher or lower than 12-14. It did not matter how fast you drove, what kind of weather it was or whether it was city/highway. For the same mileage I'll take the V-8 I have now anyday. The Ranger was built exceptionally well though, ROCK SOLID!

On paper fullsize and mini trucks apppear to
similar mileage. But remember that in a V8 truck with moderate driving habits most people don't go much above 2000 rpm. Start winding a V8 up and watch your mileage go down the sewer. In a smaller V6, varying driving habits doean't affect mileage as much. IMHO

Well, this is an interesting thread to share a discovery I made 2 weeks ago when I had a brain fart regarding saving money on gas. I drive 70 miles to and from work everyday and average 20,000 miles/year. The Ford gets 18mpg highway which is 95% of my driving. (average calculated over 8 month period, I keep gas records) This figures out to 1111 gals./year @ 1.45/gal = $1611.11/yr fuel costs. Now, me thinks "lets look at a Toyota Tacoma because I will save money on fuel" The Tacoma 4cyl w/auto is rated at 24 highway, so the above calculation equals 833gals./yr @ 1.45/gal = $1208.33/yr fuel costs. A $402.77 savings/yr. This looks reasonable to me, so I call my insurance agent for a quote on a 1999 Toyota extended cab Tacoma w/4cyl auto. This will cost me $905/yr insurance. Whoa! My Ford only costs 506/yr which equals $399 more a year insurance expense. I call 2 more agents and get similar quotes. Higher risk vehicle group they say. (Tacoma is level 16, the Ford is level 4)....Hmmmm... Rocket science at work here, guess I'll keep what I got huh? j.b.

Thumbs up

I traded in my 4.0 Manual Ranger for my f-150, and I get about 1 mpg less in the f-150. Yeah, the Ranger was a lot more aggresive, but it really sucked in the snow, and I don't need a fast truck, that's what the motorcycle is for. Good trade off as far as I am concerned.

btw- Dirt Bike Dave, I think you are my twin in CA, cause we both drive the same truck, have a Hawk GT and used to own a Ranger 4.0. Weird......
