SUPER FORD NEWS!
I know some of you hate the all caps, but this is worth it! And, I know this is a truck board, but I promise you will like this! FORD has finally, finally put the 5.4 into the mustang. In an article in the March 2000 issue of WARD's AutoWorld, the same magazine that did the top 10 engines they talk about it. Here is what it says:
"John Coletti can hardly wait. He's the chief engineer at Ford Motor Co's Special Vehicle Engineering(SVE), which developed the hottest mustang ever: The heavily modified 385 HP Cobra R, beginning production at Ford's Dearborn assembly plant. It hits the road with 5.4L V-8 power in April. Mr. Coletti claims it can run a quarter mile in just 12 seconds at 106 mph(170km/h). Top speed is said to be close to 170 mph(270 km/h). All 300 Cobra Rs Ford will build were sold last July, and they're strictly rationed to dealers via a lottery. Sticker price including luxury tax and gas-guzzler penalty (averaging aroung 19 mpg) is an eye-popping $54,995. What's next for SVE? A good bet might be an SVT performance version of Ford's new Focus to replace the Contour SVT, whick is being phased out."

Why get excited about Ford putting a 5.4 liter in a mustang if they only make 300 of them and you don't have a chance in hell of getting one? I won't get excited until they put the 5.4 in the GT or the Cobra...at least I'll have a shot at getting one.

If you are really into 'stangs, try www.corral.net They've had pics of the "R" for quite a while, but have recently updated their site with a lot of new info. It is a VERY nice car.
So THAT's where all of the replacement 5.4L F-150 engines went...hmmmmmm.

Car and Driver reported on this car a few months ago. Awesome car for rich Mustang fanatics, but if ford sells them the way the last Cobra R sold, you need a racing liscense to buy one.
DFolk88 has it right, I'll get excited when they put it in a Mustang that is at least accessable to the general public (hopefully at a reasonable price).

19mpg? I guess if I had one, I'd save money in the long run. I average about 11mpg, and I heard gas may be 1.80 or $2.00 by Summer.

Ford has been building the Mustang Cobra R for a few years now. The car is basically stripped( only 2 seats, no a/c, no stereo), these are NOT options. If you want them you have to do it yourself. The reason for all this is to have a fast quarter mile car from the factory. Back when the 5.0 was still around the put the 5.8 in it. While this is certainly the fastest Cobra R ever made, it is not anything new.

Whoa! That car isn't for the straights it's for the curves. This car pull 1.01g's in the corners. This car was built for road racing. It will out handle a C-5 vette.

Better for Cheaper?!!??! Try a $22000 Z-28 with around $800 in aftermarket bolt-ons running 12.7's. The Mustang in question ran around 12.9's, if I remember correctly for how much....$54000!!!! Ouch!!! I'm sure the Stang would out manuever the Z though. It pulled something like .99 g on the skidpad. The need to offer this package at around $28000, but what would they do with the current Cobra? Hmmmm.....
