Thumbs up Global Positioning System Satellite's (GPS)

Howdy WebMaster,

Thought I'd start a thread on Da subject. I use mine all the time, itZ too KooL. Fits right on my dash and is easy to use. I didn't want to end up with a GPS and a laptop in the cab. This unit is compact, waterproof, and pretty much built to Military specs. The unit comes with the whole US already programed in (Most major E ways and Roads. I purchased a Blank cartridge which allows you to program up to 16 MByte of more detailed maps and info into the unit. Which basically allows you to zoom in the map from 800 miles down to 500 feet, which provides you with street level detail. (subdivision street names, rivers lakes, gas stations, movie theaters, restraunts, Hotels, Motels, etc.

LetZ say your travling somewhere unfamilar, and Jr. sayZ hes hungary, hit find, a menu pops up and you can scroll thru a number of options. hit food, it than ask you what type (American, Chineese, Italian, etc. hit Italian, it then searches the surrounding area and list from the nearest to furthest Italian restraunt from your curent location. It actually shows you in tenths of a mile how far you are, and continues to update as you drive down the road. Oh Wait theres more. I don't know how of a radius it searches but I have seen while scrolling thru the list up to 50 miles out. Now select the restraunt you want and it brings up a window with the address and phone number of the place. you also have the option of showing you where the place is or guide you there. It doesn't do turn to turn directions unless you program a route in before hand, then it will actually tell you where to turn. Although I haven't had any problems locating any place with this unit.

Check out www.thegpsstore.com

I found another site that has it cheaper. I'll have to find the link

I really like GPS systems also. We used them all of the time when I flew in the ARMY. The bad thing is...we needed at least 4 satellites for it to work...and that was not always possible. Ours were accurate down to 30 feet..most of the time! We could shoot a FULL instrument approach to ANY cow field we wanted..once we programmed in a few variables. Great stuff!

It is a GREAT system..and I think we will see it used more in our cars and trucks in the future!!

Not me, man. I like old worn out road maps, compasses, and wind socks. Gives me a chance to talk to the locals. If the youngins want to eat, TOUGH!!! We ain't stoppin' at every damned Stuckey's for a pecan log and they can go pee in the weeds just like when I was a pup!!!! My trip's got to have some adventure some how.

Dustoff,

How long ago was that? I just saw some ads for the GPS and it said accurate to 5 feet.
THey seems impressive, but expensive.

LoneWolf,

I left active duty 12/12/96..so it is very possible it has become much better. I was bummed out also...our UH-60 helicopters were being fitted with H.U.D.s (Heads up displays)during my medical grounding (wrist surgery)...and that would have been great to try out.

Oh well...it was stay in and be gone all the time and take ANTHRAX shots...or get out and live a normal life. I made the right choice..but REALLY miss the flying part.

Ford man...oh yes...maps are a must..because the 'lowest bidder' was the one who obtained the ARMY contracts..and the systems did fail once in a great while. As far as in trucks...I like maps better...more of a chance of an accident using a GPS vs a map.
