5 speed manual help!!!
I posted this in the transmission forum but have not had many responces.
I have a 97 4.6 4x4 with a 5 speed manual. Today when i got in to move it it would not go into reverse. All i hear is a meshing sound not loud like missing a gear but a mellow gear sound and no reverse at all. All forward gears work fine just reverse will not engage.It goes into reverse shifting without a problem but it does not engage. What could be the issue here??

pull the drain plug. Check for chunks and shyt in the fluid.
Your gunna need a rebuild. A manual isn't overly complicated, and can be done with someone with GOOD mechanical knowledge. You can find kits online, I'm sure. Basically sounds like you lost your reverse gear. Either stripped, or something is wrong with the parts engaging it. I haven't rebuilt a Ford manual, so I wouldn't know the weak parts inside. Sorry BD. Good luck with that one.
