It's official- GM = 4 brands

GM announced this AM that it is reducing it's automaking to Chevy, Cadillac, Buick, and GMC. Hummer and SAAB to be sold. Saturn will close shop. There seems to be a little confusion about Pontiac. One source says models to be reduced to only 4 and another source says it will be absorbed into the Chevy lineup. Here's what Autoblog has on it.

Ford has also announced that development of a full size RWD sedan in concert with Ford Australia has been canceled due to economic conditions. All efforts are going into making fuel sippers. At last time I heard, the 3.5 twin turbo V6 making 350HP was scheduled as a September intro into the F-150 with fuel efficiency about 20% better than the current 4.6. Coupled to a 6 speed auto it was actually a much better driving experience. While I know a lot of you are waiting for the 6.2 in the F-150, the family in Michigan says it ain't gonna happen. Look for more twin turbo V6's and EcoBoost 4's in cars.

I wonder about pontiac. They have to save the G6. That car can't be doing any harm to them. I see so many. I bet they will put a GMC tag on the G6 and maybe the vibe and dump the rest.

Ford announced yesterday they'll be producing an all electric car in 2011, also.

They should get down to 2 brands, Chevy and Cadillac. Every decent model could be absorbed by those 2.

Pontiac has some great cars, but it seems to me like they kinda have an identity crisis...trying to search for their niche in the market...and it isn't doing to well. While the cars can move, the dealers are not moving enough cars, not unlike Oldsmobile.

The Pontiac G8's are really nice sporty bmw like cars, came very close to buying one before this truck. Its 361 hp, 24 est mpg, and 5.3 sec 0-60 isn't bad either but I kept telling myself the 6sp was the one to buy and then the ticket magnet light went off....

GM needs to get rid of Chevy trucks and keep GMC. The Chevy trucks have always looked inferior to GMC's, even if they are functionally the same truck.

Why would they do that? Haven't the Chevy trucks always outsold the GMC trucks by a wide margin?

I believe that Chevy gets higher sales numbers because there are a lot more dealers for Chevy than GMC. In my area of LA, I think I see 3 or 4 Chevy dealers for 1 GMC.
Just my .02...
