I think the last Broncos were 1996 models. I could be wrong on this. I'm sure it was because of dropping sales, and because it was based on the 1996 model F150. It would be neat if they brought it back as a 2-door Excursion or Expedition.

Correct, 96 was the last year for the Bronco. It was based on the F-150, which changed totally for 97. The Bronco is a real off-road machine. No pretend stuff like so many other trucks. We are very glad that the name was NOT carried on to the vehicle that replaced it! The Expedition is the new replacement for the minivan. People wanted something that sort of looked like it could go offroad, but had a nice ride, 4 doors, blah, blah, blah. Bronco folks are totally different. If Ford re-uses the name in the future, then they are trying to invoke the legend of the Bronco for marketing purposes. I hope they never do.

It wasn't so long ago that you could get a Bronco for WORK!! The last few years they were mostly built for yuppies and murdering ex-football stars, with luxury upholstery, car phones, and home entertainment systems. '91 was the last year you could get a 300 c.i.d. six cylinder, vinyl interior, 4 speed standard shift, and an A.M. radio.

Raoul, LMAO!!! I heard that he had written one of the world's shortest books... "My search for the real killers" by O. J. Simpson.
You guys are right about the Bronco! The marketing dept. saw a trend some time ago. All the yuppies and wannabee's rushed out to get on the SUV bandwagon. They wanted a carlike ride, plush int., and status. The result is: Mfg. took p/u trucks, put a cover over the bed, insulated the noise, puffed up the creature comforts, smoothed the bumps and JACKED THE PRICE THROUGH THE ROOF! It's our own fault! Now the cars are getting into the act and even the bigger trucks (EXPY's) aren't any kind of a HD use item anylonger. (My bet is most SUV will NEVER see any off road time)
As a serious Hangglider pilot, I see all kinds of these dressed up 4 wheel drive "Pixie cars" (like RAV 4's Honda CRV's Subaru Forester's etc.) on my way up to Hang Gliding and Paragliding launch sites. The tougher the road to launch the more truck wannabee's pulled over. Most do not have a 4Lo setting and can't make the steeper sections unless towed.
I tell people not to pay attention to the hype, marketing and commercials, but hey usually don't listen and buy these things anyway. They site reasons such as It's good on gas, it's small enough to park easily, and my favorite... It doesn't need to have a V8 since the engineering is better.
I can't understand why people don't see that it is not possible to compromise the durability of a truck with a useless 4 wheel drive "Pixie car". They won't last like a truck, don't handle as well as a car, are more expensive than a car to buy/insure and have very limited benifit.
I suppose I am just as guilty as the next yuppie since I bought the Lariat but under all the comfy stuff sits a TRUCK.
ENUF of my ramblings...
Bruce

I seen something in the Truck Trend Magazine a while ago, and it showed a 2 door Expedition or Excursion and called it a Bronco. Who knows, Ford always has a few tricks up their sleaves.

Bronco's kick a$$...I would trade my truck on a nice one any day! I found a 91 Silver Anniversary with a 351W,E40d, Silver with accents....Of course it had 45k and they wanted 12 grand for it!!!!!1

Someday, I am going to get one, and restore it!

. '91 was the last year you could get a 300 c.i.d. six cylinder, vinyl interior, 4 speed standard shift, and an A.M. radio.
Nope, not the case, according to the 1992 brochure. It says you can get a 300 with the 5-speed or the E40d. 1992 was the last year for the 300, in the bronco. It also was the last year for the "Custom" package in The F-series, and the Bronco. The lowest package was the "XL"...

1993 was the final year for the fully vinyl (buckets) interior,

Also, It was pre-1990 that ford stopped the 4-speed manual in the bronco...

It's really sad because Chevy makes a 2 door Yukon.

The "Custom" trim was continued through the '98 model year (know this for a fact), changed the name to "Work Truck" series for '99. Fewer options available now, though. You can't believe dealer brochures, 99.9% of the time they're WRONG.

If thats true...Howscome I HAVEN'T see any customs AFTER the 1992 year? I HAVE NOT ever seen one...They did have a package lower than the XL, it was called "special"...

Your correct, the brochures do change throughout the year.

--1992-custom package
1996-Special
1997-standard package
the 99 brochure doesn't mention any lower package than the Xl, although I have seen some cheapies with just the F-150 decal, no package decal

So would the "custom" package be used in other areas? Because I haven't seen any after the 92 model year...

54RegCab: Gm quit the 2-door when they change the design to the 2k models, I am not sure if they make one for 2k in the old style, such as a z71 package or whatever...

Bronco's are by far, better, because from 1978-1996, you can remove the rear top...Fun in the summer!

Probably because of the fact very few dealers ever keep anything as plain as a custom on their lots. Generally you have to order in a BASIC pickup. That's what I had to do, but I opted for the XL because I wanted chrome bumpers/wheels (got a vinyl seat, floor board, radio with no cassette, heavy suspension). After '96, the custom decals were discontinued (there aren't any work truck decals either). I see a LOT of fleet vehicles with the custom package. See the Ford site, the work truck package is the base model.
