What is an Engineer?
In Canada, you can become an engineer in 1 of 2 ways. 1) Drive a train for a living. 2) Go to University for 4 years to get an Engineering degree! The 2 are very different. I suppose your University/College system works very similar. There are many types of engineers such as Civil (plan city services, roads), Mechanical (I am one of these, we design any type of mechanical components used for any purpose such as designing and specifing the 'hard' components that make up our trucks or the tools that make the parts), Electrical (You guessed it, electricity, and electronics like the brains behind the Superchips), Structural (bring life to buildings by designing the support structures as well as bridges), Etc.
I belong to SAE or Society of Automotive Engineers, there are many organizations for the sharing and disseminating of information.
Hope this helped

I think you have to go to school to learn the proper time to pull the cord for the train's whistle...Toot Toot. And of course theres the proper alignment of that nifty hat.
I could be wrong, this is just a guess

I'm just wondering if I don't know what one is. (I have an Mechnical Engineering Degree, I'm a member of SAE and ASME, Order of the Engineer, and work as an engineer) I just wonder what it is that makes a person an engineer?
Oh, I think I get it. A more philosophical question? I am a structural engineer with a P.E. license (passed the test and as a reward can be held legally liable for anything with my stamp on it). I think what makes a person an engineer is a really warped mind. The more twisted and analytical, the better. Who else would spend hours trying to fix an old toaster or radio, when you can get a new one for a half hours pay? Here's a test: If someone comes to you and says "Bet you can't figure this out..." and you jump on it like Oprah on a honey ham, you're either an engineer or should be one.

What is an engineer?
Three men are being executed by guilotine, a priest, a drunk and an engineer. The priest is first and they ask him,
"Face up or face down?"
The priest says, "I want to see where I'm going for eternity, face up!".
They put him in face up and release the blade.
Miraculously, the blade stops inches from his throat. The executioners take this as a sign from God and the priest is released.
Next the drunk is asked face up or down. The drunk says it worked for the priest so why not? Once again the blade stops inches from his throat and the drunk is freed.
Then the engineer goes for the face up proceedure. He is placed in the contraption and moments before the blade is relesed he yells out,
"Oh wait, I see what your problem is!"

A civil engineer told me this one:
A mechanical engineer, electrical engineer and civil engineer were having beers after work. They began to debate what kid of engineer God is.
As proof God was a mechanical engineer, the ME pointed out the human hand. "The delicate mechanics are proof that God is a mechanical engineer", He claimed.
The electrical engineer claimed that God is an EE, based on the beauty and intricacies of the electrical system that comprises the human brain.
The Civil Engineer was able to top them both. He said, "I can prove God was a Civil Engineer. My example is the human crotch. Who else but a Civil Engineer would put the sewage disposal system right next to the primary recreation area?"
