Class III or bother at all?
well, i'm going for the class III one that I can get at Canadian Tire. The price difference between the step bumper one and the whole hitch is not too bad. Thanks for all the info., I really appreciate it.

defacto:
Your bumper (your new hitch for sure) may be rated at 5000, but from your signature, it looks like your truck is only rated for 2000# (907kg). Same as BarryH's truck.
I don't know if a 15' boat + trailer + stuff + fuel + engine weighs more than 2000#, but your idea about weighing the boat is a good one. Be sure to have it loaded just like you would when headed out to the water. Also, be sure to unhook the boat from the tow vehicle when on the scales. Knowing the true weight will help you get the correct tongue weight- which is ~10% of the total trailer weight.

Defacto, what the heck, aye? I got one from UHaul that hides up underneath the rear bumper for $150.00 US installed plus $25.00 US for the 2.5 inch drop insert and $5.00 US for a plastic "chrome" cap that doesnt rust. This was on my 97 XL SC 4x4 4.6L. My current truck came with the tow package. A friend of mine "scrunched" his truck bumper by turning too sharp with just the ball on the bumper.

Nomo:
Thanks for the information, I'm gonna weigh it soon. I'll be blown away if it's over 2000# though, but better safe than sorry eh?
Assuming that the weight is O.K., I think the hitch will help mainly with control. What do you think?
Crow150:
That is EXACTLY what my friend did with his. To sharp, and SCREEAATCH! Thus, one of the main reasons for this issue.

Most definitely: safety first!
The frame-mounted reciever will allow you to get the correct height for the ball by using either a "drop" or "raise" draw-bar. Having the trailer at the correct height (level when hitched) does help with control. IMO, it's worth the extra $$.
Don't think the reciever will make you immune to jack-knife accidents. Just ask my wife about the tail-light lens that is cracked on her Expedition. I may never hear the end of it!
