Seacrow: I noticed somewhere, that you have a 71 Gmc pickup.

I am considering purchasing a 72 cheyenne Super that is partially restored. The owner is a classmate of mine in Highschool. It has a built 377, openheaders, and pushing around 400-450hp. and needs only a new Turbo 350 tranny and finishing of the interior. Truck has 32thou since build in 1997. He isn't exactly sure he wants to sell it, but if he did, he would want $5,000. Would this be a deal? I may do this or move up to a 1997 or newer F-150. I am in college, so I am wanting a new toy.

Past,

These trucks are worth more original from what I have learned. If it has factory A/C, a factory tach, and is a shortbed, AND it all works then 5K may not be too much. I have been told that mine restored would go for around 6500. I don't have air or tach but I do have a 350 4bbl, auto, and the chrome package. Mine is also a long bed.

A 72 Super Cheyenne with the 402, SB, auto, factory air, tach and RARE vacuum gauge, in original/restored original condition is a 10-15K truck. Even junkers with these options go for $5K. If your friends truck is a long bed with no A/C at least, I would not touch it for 5K. Maybe $3500 at the most. It depends on the exact condition.

I would still buy a newer F-150. If you want an old Chevy there is a place in Texas I think that will build to order any 67-72 Chevy truck you want. It is just like ordering a new Chevy in the olden days. Any body, color, options you want. they even add in the factory flaws and marks on parts etc. Get your degree and then get toys is what I say.

As for my 71 GMC, I have the interior mostly gutted now and the engine is coming out this month sometime for a total rebuild. once that is done it goes in for a new paint job. I inhierited(sp?) mine. I drove it a lot when I was 15, it was my granfather's truck and I spent the summer of 88 with him, about 2 months, I will never forget that summer and I will never sell this truck. I even hate Chevy and GM alltogether but not this one. It is special and now retired to it's own garage/workshop where I go to work on it when I can.

Let me know if you have any more questions.

Thumbs down

skip the chevy for sure, your friend asks a lot of money for his nostalgia. It would take a lot for you to get the $5K back out of it.

Talk them down on the 97 Lariat, around $13,500 would be a much better deal. The mileage is slightly high for a 3 yr. old truck. Look up the value on www.nada.com

Add factory flaws? cool!

No seriously though, it doesn't have air, and I don't know about the guages, he replaced them with autometer. It had very bad rust under the doors on both sides, and I think under the tailgate. It isn't a excellent restore, It looks like he cut some corners at some places, such as wiring. Can barely see the taillights. A guy that works with my dad bought a 72 in Texas that is all original, except for the new paint and wheels, and his has a factory tach, air, 400, but his is also a longbed, I don't think I have ever seen a shortbed up close. I see what your saying about the "family heirloom", my dad is eventually going to buy his first car back, '48 Ford 2dr all original. right now its in a musuem, and hasn't been started/drivin in about 12 years. He bought it in 1966, from the orig owner and it had about 3?k miles, and it has 60k now. He told me he got it for 300 dollars.

I found a 97 Lariat supercab with 52k 4.6L/auto for 14,995, seems to me a good deal. I think I'll make a trip down there Monday.

Thanks again!

13,5? I could buy that out straight! The dealer is a wholesale Ford dealer in a large city and is huge. My hometown dealer has trucks that are pretty much the same, and selling them for 17-19 thou. He also has at least 2 for over a year.
