Post Gas Millage

I bought the 4.2 v6 because it was cheaper and I thought it would get better millage.
The cheaper might be true but my gas millage sucks, about 12mpg.
I have heard the 2000 5.4's have improved millage even better that the 4.6's. Are there any 2000 5.4 owners with millage data yet?

I believe 5.4's for 2000 get around 15-16 city and 19-20 highway. 12 for a V6 sounds low!

I bought my '97 reg cab XLT-STX a week ago.
Has 35,500 miles, auto, 4.2L. Just got back from a road trip of which 95% of the 380 miles was highway. I got about 19.3 mpg.
Cruise control set almost constantly at 73 mph, tach showed 2100 rpm, no air conditioning running and very little wind.
Had tailgate up and locked.
Seems to me this is pretty fair mileage. Is it?

Wow, and to think I was bummed with my mileage. 12 is really low, but is this actual calculation, or estimation from reading the fuel guage. Don't trust the fuel guage and trust the pump and trip meter. I too opted for the V-6 because I thought I could get that extra 25 miles, but the mileage suggest I might be driving a V-8 4x4, although the power obviously is not there. I consider myself lucky if I break 17 mpg's. Even on my early miles, I never got below 16 usually, the exception being one time when it was driven 5 miles at WOT making 14.7 (how that can make such a big effect, I don't know), and a 15 mpg loaded to the hilt with frozen meats (500-700 lbs overload) running at 85-90 with two slopes. Maybe you should have yours checked? How do you drive? I drive lightfoot, staying at 65, although nearly a third of my miles I have 1000 lbs or more payload. I also have a cap, use 87 octane with MTBE, no A/C and the K&N.

I have had my 99 4.6 M offroad extra cab since May, I have figured my mileage every time I have topped off. I have been getting 17.5 MPG 80% highway best being 20.3 mpg on a trip back from Slovakia to 13.4 MPG 0% highway, 5 mile trips back and forth to work. I live over here in Europe, but still keep the speeds to around 65-70mph. No add ons except the great factory toneau cover.

Cadd,

Drive some more, and do the MPG thing over. Might have been some bad gas or something.

Caddpro,

I would not be too sure about the 2000 5.4's getting much better mileage than the 4.6's. My rig gets 13.4 - 14 in the city, although I only have about 1,000 miles and hope it will improve with more break-in. Regardless, I didn't buy the truck solely (or even partly) for the gas mileage. Better luck with you next tank of gas!

I have been tracking my mileage now "100% Faithfully", "Every" tank, for 2 years now.
I have the 4.6 & I average 15 mpg in the city every week.
I think the highest highway mileage I've gotten was 18 mpg. ?? I'll have to go look at the records.
I did just get an ARE hard tonneau cover for Christmas last month & it seems to be a little better maybe ? Too early to tell.
Next month I'm going to the F-150 rally in Dallas which is 2.5 hrs. (180-200 miles) north of here so I'll have my first "Tonneau/highway" mileage test to check out. I'll post the results when I get back.
