I have a 2000 F-150 and I need to know where to mount the brake controller on the dash.

Thanks

Well the correct answer is to mount it where you want to. After all, its your truck.
Now if your asking where the plug in for it is (They are pre-wired) Its on the left hand side of the steering right under the fuse box, attached to a metal plate which by the way is an excellent place to mount the controller.

That plate will put it too far up under the dash and I will not be able to adjust it that easily while driving. The dash does not have alot of lip to mount anything on it. I guess I will figure something out.

How about mounting it near the steering column?

There is a pocket or cubby hole near your right knee on the knee panel. I took apart the dash to get the knee panel off. Then I cut a hole in the rear of the pocket to put the plugs for the controller through (leave a lip at the bottom so small items won't fall through). The harness plug was just the other side of the pocket. It works perfect on my truck, plus the controller can be removed/installed/adjusted very quickly. I couldn't find anywhere less obtrusive to mount the thing. My truck is a 97 XLT. I'm not sure if lower trim levels have the pocket.

I have mine near that lip, easily adjustable. Key thing to watch out for though, the computer plug-in is in that area. When I had to have the dealership run a check of the transmission codes it was blocking their entrance just a little bit. For them to remove it was $35.00! The RV dealer originally installed it and it took me all of 3 minutes to move it a over, wasting mine time picking it up and having to return it to the dealer.

Although, the test drive identified no problems but the computer codes reflected a problem and I got a new tranny out of the deal (that was my 98 that I had).

Bent6, you're right that is a perfect place for a brake controller. Unfortunetly, LHM has a 2000 model and unbelievably Ford removed that cubby. What do you think that saved them per truck, 12 cents?

Yep that cubby hole is gone, although I have to admit I did go outside and look for it, but I knew I hadn't seen one on there. I guess I will figure something out, because with a 16'ft gooseneck with two horses and everything else in it, you need some brakes. They give you a harness and pre wire it for you, and then don't give you anywhere to mount it. I got time to study it though, I am supposed to have the ball put in next week, and then I have to see if the rear of the truck is too high for the trailer, if so I will have to take the blocks out of the rear, but I really do not want to do that.

Why is Ford going backwards on some of these items? Most car companies give you more standard features as a generation of cars/trucks ages. That pocket was a great spot for the controller. I called the dealer, and the cost for the panel is $100. If you ask for wholesale cash, you can get 25% off of that price. I'm not sure if the color will will be the same between 97-00.

54regcab,
Controllers apply electric trailer brakes. Modern controllers are electronic and are either time based or inertia based. Timed contollers have adjusments for delay and force, and will operate in any position. Inetia based controllers sense how hard you are stopping and adjust the brake force automaticly. They must be leveled and installed parallel with the direction of travel.

I kind of miss that little ole wallet holder. Thinking of going down to the dealer and getting one for a 99, should snap right on to the 2000.
