Topped out?...

So on my way back to school Sunday night, me and my buddy ('00 Cavi) were screwin' around on back roads, making our way towards Columbus on Hwy 71. Well I wanted to show him how I can now chirp my tires from a stand with my new 93 tune. Came to a stop sign, didn't chirp, but did a wicked fishtail onto the intersecting road. I decided to go ahead and top out my truck, think I would get up around 115 or so....(I don't have a GPS, so true speed was unknown).

Anyways, I was going at about 2900 RPM, and the speedo was past 100, settling on the peg. My friend says his cavi cuts of a 107, and before he hit it, I was still pulling away.

Long story short, is there truely a maximum speed the truck can reach?? Because I didn't see the tach go a hair past 2900 for about 1/2 mi.....

Maximum speed is all dependent. The wind, aerodynamics, rotational mass, weight, tire pressure, power, drivetrain etc. etc.

But yes, there is a maximum speed for a vehicle at which point it can no longer overcome air resistance. It's just different top speeds for different vehicles in different situations.

Ya stock its like 100mph, I found this out when I regeared and my speedo was off by like +20 and couldnt go past 80mph on the freeway haha, but with a tuner you should be able to raise it, like I have the hypertech tuner and set mine at 128 mph. Now why anyone would want to go that fast in a truck is besides me but I guess its there if you need it.

EDIT: well yes that is the reason our trucks only go to 100 mph on the speedo whereas a ferrari goes to 240mph.

Well I mean my speed limiter is off....at least I think Justin turned it off in my tune, because I went past 100, and I don't think you can just raise it....can you? And can I go back and raise it some more?

your truck will do 115. my truck will do 115. BTW i do not recommend doing 115 with 35's. justin fixed my speedo its about 1/2mph off of my navigation. justin removed my limiter w/ out asking so im sure he does it for all tuning.

Your limiter is off. You just can't get past 115 or whatever you got to because the air resistance is too great. If you want to go faster you're going to need more horsepower.

My truck would get to the 120 on the speedo before i lifted it, at which point i cannot tell how fast its actually going. But my new mud tires are speed rated at 95 so i will never go that fast again. I never go faster than 75 anyways, usually only 70 since i get good mileage at that speed.

Oh yeah i have Troyer Performance tuning, so the speed limiter was removed. Before the tunes the limiter was 100.

I would check the speed rating on your tires by the way...

I've been up to 110 and it seemed like it still had more left in it, but my tires are rated to 170MPH so I have no worries there.

Well I looked it up, and my 255/70/16 Pirelli ATR's are rated "T", so 118 mph. By the time I have enough horsepower to get me to that, I will have new, higher spped tires and rims.

You can go as fast as you want, but it all depends on how much you want to spend. You'd have to lower your truck, install high speed tires, make your truck more aerodynamic, regear it, and of course get more power. I'm sure you could go 200 MPH if you were willing to pay about $100,000.
