Things to do/say to avoid a speeding ticket
Let's here it from the officers on the board, what is/are the best things to do/say to get a warning instead of a ticket when getting stopped.
Thanks in advance for any ideas/suggestions you might have.

"Did you know that I was a crossing guard for three years in Junior High? Oh, and I got beat up alot too! But I wouldn't quit, no sir!"
"What's this? A ticket? You remember me? Oh, it was raining and you had no umbrella? I was in Junior High for crying out loud! I didn't even know what sadistic means!"
"What? Get out of the car? Assume what position? Resisting arrest? Heh, that hurts! What bag? I've never seen that before! Possession with intent??"

As a teenager, I used to drink at this pizza place I worked at while cleaning up to go home. (I know it was dumb, and I don't drink and drive now) I would often drink a couple of 40 oz. This one day, on the way home, I had to pee really bad, so I was racing home and as I rounded the last curve to my appt., I squealed my tires and heard behind me, another car squeal theirs. That other car was the cops! He came up to my car and I thought I was going to pee my pants. This thought bothered me so much that I started crying. He asked me where was I going and I said I was home. Then he asked what was wrong and I didn't know what to say, so I said "it's personal." He went back to his car and quickly returned to say that he had an emergency to go to and to be careful. He left with out his flashing lights on, and yes, I did make it to the bathroom!
Another time same situation (drinking) I was taking a freind home from work and missed the street by one street. This street was off of Wide Track Dr. a four lane, one way, three mile circle. I looked at my freind and said "I'm gonna go for it" as I pulled out and proceded to go the wrong way to the next street. Guess what was there waiting? I accidently passed the street again while cursing my bad luck, and turned on to the street on the other side of that "ever elusive street" and pulled to the side on that street. The cop came up to me and asked "Where are you going?" (is that standard, or exclusive to me?) and I said the name of the street and pointed to the other street. He then asked "Did you know that you just went the wrong way on a one way street?" For lack of a better answer, I returned with "Did I?" he said yeah, here follow me and I followed him to the street and waved "thanks" as I took my freind home. He couldn't beleive it! Me not getting a ticket and all. Moral: (besides don't drink and drive) When in doubt, play dumb!
"Officer, I shouldn't be telling you this but, I'm deep undercover. So deep in fact, that no agency knows about me."
"That TV and stereo in the back? Uh...that's evidence!"
"That TV and stereo in the back? Uh...that's evidence!"
For an $79 investment you can beat all tickets. This costume is cheaper than the best radar detector.
"Why, yes officer that is my McGruff Crime Dog suit in the back. I'm late to a crime prevention program at the elementary school."
"I know it's 2am! I told you I'm running late!"

I'd like to hear Davensa and JFP's best excuses for speeding, and I *KNOW* Raoul has got to be the funniest person alive and I think that when we have get-2-gethers anywhere in the country, we should fly him in for entertainment. You know, he is running for president!

>>>>Hey guys the best thing I can tell ya is just to be honost and show at least some remorse. Depending on the speed it might help you, some speeds you just aren't going to get let go for. But, if I observe you slow to a slower speed before I stop you, if you have a good attidude and don't try to lie to me. I will usually reduce it to a the lower speed if you were traveling at an initial speed that I couldn't let you go completely for. Honosty has saved a lot of people I stopped from at least getting reckless driving tickets. I realize that sometimes people get their minds on other things and lose track of what they're doing. Every officer is different, there is a certain speed over the limit you have to be doing before I will stop you (LOL, can't tell ya, if I did I'd have to kill ya shortly there after
and it is high enough over that the motorist has a good margin for accidental error) There is also a certain area that I will stop speeders at, and if the situation dictates it I will give a warning. Those are the areas that honosty helps. I hate to say this, but you hear so many B.S. excuses that they all start to sound alike and really don't help any. It's really refreshing to hear someone say, you know, I just messed up, or I'm sorry I just made a mistake than to hear someone make up something or cop an attitude with me. It really doesn't hurt you anyway, because if the officer stops you, he's has already seen you speeding and doesn't need a confession.
>>>>Like I said, that is what I respect or like to hear the most from a speeder, it may not help you with anyone else, and it doesn't work all the time with me because there are certain speeds I just cant let someone go for. But it might make the difference between a ticket for reckless driving and just speeding.

Well just let them know you're being followed by a crazed goat herder from Virginia
in a Lariat, they'd have to understand and let you go.
Treat the man like you'd want him to treat you, with respect. I've been lucky (knocking on wood/my head), been stopped a few times in my younger days but cooperated fully with mucho politeness/respect, never argued, and thankfully have only been verbally warned, and they all weren't only for speeding.
Now for another question to our officer's on the board, I'm originally from the east coast. My father in-law is retired from the force. I've received FOP and PBA cards from him, never tried to use them but I've talked to friends (police) out here on the west coast who had no clue as to what they are. On the other side of the country they can help with some consideration, is this true where you're from?

Hmmmm lets see, there have been so many funny excuses let me try to remember just a few and share em with ya.
>>Just recently I stopped a married couple from Tennessee for speeding 74 in a 55 zone. The man was driving, I started back to my car and the wife said to me, "Sir, we are from Tennessee and we are used to doing at least 70 mph everywhere we go". Had to laugh at that one.
>>A few years back I stopped two men in a car for going very fast. When I approached the car the man driving said the passenger, his father was having a heart attack. Concerned, I offered to call an ambulance for them, he declined and said they would just drive on to the hospital on their own. I then offered to take him to the hospital in my car, or at least call ahead to the hospital to let them know that we were coming and I would give them an escort to the hospital. They then declined and the father then said that all of a sudden he felt better and didn't think he wanted to go to the hospital anymore. Needless to say, he then got a ticket.
>>I once stopped a kid in a camaro for going 116 in a 55 zone. He said he didn't think he was going that fast and said that his speedometer only went up to 95mph and that's all he thought he was doing.
>>Stopped a guy for going very fast, he told me he had just washed his car at the carwash and was just trying to blow the water off of it. Another guy I stopped had another man in the car with him, he told me that his car had a very bad vibration when he got up to 85 mph and he was just trying to show his mechanic the vibration.
>>Once met a guy flying and passing on a double solid line coming right towards me. The guy then proceeded to turn off on a side road and hide on me. Needless to say I saw him turn off and I found him. He then asked me if I could give him break, said he didn't realize he was speeding and that he thought he could pass on a solid line if nothing was coming, that he didn't see me until he pulled out. He said he was running late, that he had to be at a safe/defensive driving school in Kentucky by the order of a judge for a speeding ticket he had gotten there. Needless to say, a couple of tickets.
>>Last, although not speeding related it is a funny story. I had arrested this guy twice for DUI in a one month period, both times he was very, very drunk. Another trooper I worked with had gotten him a third time in this same period. He was a chronic offender. When it came up to his trial date someone had sent in a letter to the court explaining that this man had died from a heart attack, I didn't see it though it must have looked official and the court put the charges aside. Two months later I was traveling through a small town when I passed the local bar. Well low and behold I saw his truck parked right out front with the same tags on it. I stopped my car and walked up to the front window and saw him sitting at the bar on a stool. Fittingly believe it or not this was on Easter Sunday. I walked in the front door, went up behind him and pecked on his shoulder. He looked back at me and his face just went pale, I told him that he looked pretty darn good for a dead man and that he should feel pretty darn special to be the first person since Jesus to be resurected on Easter Sunday. I arrested him and had his charges reinstated.
Just a few stories, hope you enjoyed them....take care

Another good cop story from my neighbor:
Outside of Kansas City he's sitting along the side of the road when a car comes by doing 135+ mph. He eventually catches up to him and the guy give the "drying the car" excuse. Since he had the guys license, insurance, and registration he told him to follow him back into town. They preceded to a Wal-Mart parking lot, cop got out of his car and told the guy to go in and buy himself some chamois! He came out crying with about $50 worth and handed the cop some. The cop told him to slow down and that he'd be watching for him and let him go.

Immediately get out the vehicle and begin walking in circles clutching your stomach and dancing. Explain to the officer how bad you need to crap and apologize for the high speed.

I have found NOTHING works for me. I have been pulled over 5 times in my driving career and ticketed every time. I am always respectful and polite with the officers, but they just won't give me a break. The worst time was when traveling through NJ (that should be enough said in itself) I noticed that I had a burned out headlight. My wife and I went into the nearest town to attempt to find a replacement. This was a Sunday afternoon and many places were closed. I traveled from gas station to gas station. Well when I went right across the street from one station to another, I neglected to fasten my seat belt, and I'm one of those who usually will not take it out of park until everyone's buckled in. This scrawny small town deputy pulled in behind me and ticketed me, even when I politely explained that I was trying to get a light bulb for my car so I wouldn't get a inspection ticket.
Just my luck!
