Question regarding OT cuts
Could go into a great amount of detail with this, but I won't. Just looking for some advice / guidance.
Started with my current employer in Feb. of '04. Since day one, I have worked 45hrs/week, 5 of them being OT. I have not once for any prolonged occassion cut back my hours or been asked to.
Now, due to the economy, my company has laid off 5 ppl. Keep in mind, no one has EVER been laid off in the company's history. I am upper/mid management, and have been tld numerous times I have nothing to worry about, mainly due to my knowledge and capabilities inside the company.
3 weeks ago, I was 'told' no OT would be approved for anyone in my department (or the company) including myself. I explained my case to my 'new boss' and get the same old "I'll see what I can do"... but I know where it'll go. No where.
I'm now in the midst of writing a very professional letter explaining to him/HR and the Co. president that after the fall semester, I will be unable to continue working on my Manufacturing Eng. degree due to the "financial hardships" my family is undergoing being short ~$250-300 per bi weekly pay.
To make matters worse, HR just sent out a letter asking anyone/everyone willin to anty up $50 to purchase the Co. president a Christmas present!
What, if you were in this position, would you do?

so your still in college and working 45hrs a week? IMO i don't see that 5 hrs being to big of deal, if it is maybe you should cut some things out of your life to save some money. do you need the degree to keep your current job?
If I were you, I'd turn around and find out what the noise is behind me. You'll find a long, long line of folks waiting for your job....and some probably more qualified than you school boy. If you have a job, you're a blessed person. We got locked out yesterday. Job is over and finding a new one is next to impossible. Even Walmart isn't hiring. Do what ya want but if you get handed yer asse, it's your fault.
Keep ya mouth shut and be thankfull you have a job. i got "LAID" two weeks ago and i was there 12 years and there aint nothing out there right now and ive been poundin the concrete real hard.
Under the current state of the world economy I would work the 5 hours for free and do my best to contribute to the Christmas fund for the Pres. thus kissing as much booty as possible. Life has changed for many as of late. No OT is minor in the total scheme of things. Just my opinion. Good luck with your decision.
time to cut back..... hell I'm living at home and only making $9 an hour. but I'm happy to have that job

Hell i was almost triple that and i would kill for that $9hr right now
I do not need a degree to keep my current job. In actuality, I've been doing the job of a manufacturing engineer for 4.5yrs.
I have cut back, unfortunately I won't be able to afford ~$1500 for tuition per semester AND paying my mortgage / truck payments / 'things' for 2 kids / etc.

Not "tooting my horn", but in these neck of the woods there aren't many qualified "school boys" (which btw I am NOT) willing to put in the effort to do the job. They'd all rather sit behind the desk. I'm a working supervisor, and have never asked any of my guys to do anything I wouldn't do... just like when I was in the Corps.
I've been in the manufacturing field long enough to know that common sense and experience gets you further than a piece of paper. The piece of paper I'm after has just been a "luxury" which many in my company has pushed me to get.

I didn't start this post to encite a riot or anything. And I totally understand the economy sucks big time. Ah... who knows what I was looking for.
Sell a toy... not sure which one to sell. Most of my "toys" are necessities in one way or another.
I'm not stupid enough to quit, or even try to play that hand right now. I was taught right when I was younger. Don't bluff unless you've got nothing to lose... and I've got a lot to lose if I get called.
