Scholarships

Okay heres my predicament. Im going to Texas A&M University next year and am all excited. However I need to get some scholarships to help out with the financial stand point. The problem is that my family doesnt qualify for financial aid and most scholarships say you have to only make so much money. I really would like some scholarships that would help out with the stuff, just dont know where to go and what to look for. Our counselor gave us packets, but most of them are for low-income or minority.

Im white male ranked number 10 in my class, so I got the brain, just have to much money to be classified as finacially challenged, but not enough to not have to worry about college.

There should be a financial aid office at A&M. Find out and contact them to see if there are any scholarships or grants for which you might qualify.

Apply for any scholarship out there, especially in your home town. Anything helps.

hey 4 years ago i was in the same boat as you. just fill out all the applications that you qualify for and dont worry about what they say about income. most of the time they wont make income the deciding factor. my parents do very well for themselves but i still apllied for as many scholarships as a could and just never filled in what my parents made(didnt know anyways) and i ended up getting 3 really good scholarships. Apply! Apply! Apply!

Hey---did you have a long talk with your guidance counselor? There are plenty of scholarships available---open to everybody. You just have to know about them and request the apps.

Remember, the root word of "scholarship" is "scholar"---so they are indeed looking for the intelligent students who are willing to do the paperwork, fill out the forms, and express themselves in an extremely positive manner.

If you are ranked #10 in your class, then A&M will certainly want you as a student. Almost every college and university that I know of offers scholarships and have "scholarship days" where a student can take tests and qualify for more moolah.

Remember, you do not have to be finamcially challenged to be awarded a scholarship---financial aid is different---but scholarships go to the best and to the brightest. Go for them!

If you don't qualify for financial assistance your family must be loaded enough to pay for you to go.

Start searching those websites with the huge lists of random "apply here if you have 3 hands" scholarships.

they shouldn't ask what your parents make, some parents make their kids pay for it any ways. just leave it blank on what they make, and also put down other instead of white. thats what i was always told

My daughter received a National Merit Scholarship. Parental income was not an issue. Apply for everything you can find.

Well national merit is a little different.. But I am in the exact same boat I have widowed mom who makes lots of money but she has me and my sister in college and doesnt make enough topay 25 grand for school. so I did what everyone else told you to do find scholarships and apply. Try www.fastweb.com tons of scholarships there. Also look under www.collegeboard.com they also have many scholarships, and my last piece of advice is to go to the schools website and apply for every scholarship they have. Good luck man

EDIT: TA&M scholarships: https://financialaid.tamu.edu/future...3&pop=2&disp=2

their website should have a link to almost all the scholarships available to you, look in there, and scholarships usually are not dealt with by income, you might be looking at grants. not sure if they are the same as asu but file for your FAFSA as soon as possible, actually january is the soonest you can. then apply for any and all grants, trust me they have some that will work for you. then finally apply to any and all scholarships. and move out so you are not considered under your parents income

I am applying for FAFSA as soon as I can. When applying for the scholarship on applytexas.com the A&M scholarship questions had a whole page on finacial status. How much both parents make a year, how much you have saved for college, how much your parents have in savings, how much they have in buisnesses, possesions, ect. They say they can and will check tax's.

And my parents do have enough money to pay for college outright, but I would rather not put that on them. I will work throughout college and really would like to offer some assistance so they dont have to change there life style to put me through college. Then once I graduate my sister starts so it starts all over again.

As a parent that has been there, I really commend you for that attitude.
