Post Ford trucks in top 10 list for most popular vehicles stolen

I heard on the radio that Ford trucks are in the top 10 of vehicles targeted for theft. I wonder how many stick shifts vs. automatics of the Ford trucks are stolen?

I heard/read the same thing. That is probably why FORD started adding the securilock anti-theft key system for the 1999/2000 models to help prevent this.

Hey they're #7, but guess who is in the top three? Chevy....well who needs late model parts more than a late model chevy? Ha Ha! They only steal the Fords cuz they look so good.

If you all have been here reading long enough, then you know that my truck was almost stolen in the DC area. These low-lifes were using a tow truck to take it. From what I've heard about stealing vehicals, it doesn't matter what kind of security system you have, if the theif uses a tow truck, your ride is gone. And I've also heard (on a news program on TV) that even the LowJack system doesn't help because by the time they find it, "if" it's already past our coast then it's too expensive for them to go after it. Most of these vehicals are not being stolen to go to a chop-shop. They are being sold in foreign countrys where the theif makes a ton of $$$.

I remember your earlier post Tina and I agree....not much can be done if a tow truck is involved! All we can do is make it as difficult as possible for low-lifes like this.
Are any of the 99 models equiped with the special computer chip ignition keys or was this introduced starting with the 2000's? My 98 did not have this.

Question

If my info is correct, there are more Ford trucks on the road than any other vehicle. So the fact that they aren't the #1 vehicle stolen should be a relief.

Since our late model Ford trucks have the antitheft key, is there a way that they can be hotwired, or would a thief have to tow or haul it to steal it?

mkrieger, crack the column, turn ignition to start, let it turn over twice, turn the ignition back to run, pop the hood, short the starter relay and presto, it starts with no key. Don't ask me how I know.

You all are right, the National ranking is 7th, but out here in AZ it is 2nd. And the shovie is #1.
The reason that it second is because there are sooooo many trucks out here, and its like open hunting season for the low lifes that steal our trucks!!!

The only reason they steal the Fords is so the can haul all those chevy parts around to sell after the chop them up.

Here are a couple of anti theft ideas. I've done this on my '93: install a hidden switch wired into the fuel pump circuit (the circuit for the inertia switch is good). By the time the low life has broken the steering column and hot wired the engine and it still won't start, he'll give up. Another variation I've heard of but don't know if it works: supposedly there is a circuit that caused the shifter (automatics) to unlock when you step on the brake to shift out of Park. With a hidden switch on this circuit, the truck won't shift out of Park. Of course, none of this will stop the tow truck thieves. When you park, turn your wheels all the way to one side. Makes it much harder to tow with the truck "doglegging" all over the place.

Tenderpaw: turning the wheels does nothing; locking the steering with a club does nothing when the low life is using a tow truck to connect to the FRONT of your truck. They lift the front end off the pavement. On mine, they were making good use of "MY" well placed tow hooks!!

If you see a tow truck pulling a new Ford truck, write down both license plate #'s and call the cops! What are the odds that a new Ford would need to be towed? If a 3-year old or newer truck looks healthy, it probably is. By giving the cops a FYI call, the next truck saved will probably be yours. You'll also keep insurance cost down on our trucks.
