Exclamation Computer Guys - HELP I need a boot CD

I have a Sony Viao computer that I bought around 2003 that seems to be on it's last leg.

Everything works ok but it needs cleaned up really bad.

I want to wipe out the hard drive and reinstall windows XP on it. Which is what it originally had and still does.

I can't find the original Windows CD that I need to re install windows.

Can't I download a new one somewhere?

I went to the Sony website but they don't even have this model number listed anymore.

It's a Sony Viao PCG-9J2L

As long as you have a valid CD-Key you should be able to use any OEM CD image available on Bitorrent. If you call Sony, they should sell you one pretty cheap.

Eric Fuehring> PCG-9J2L

Cory_> The specific model # that's either above the keyboard on either side, on the hinge or around the frame of the LCD display.

Cory_> It will start with 'PCG' or 'VGN' followed by alphabet and then number.

Cory_> Are you using the same Computer to chat with me?

Eric Fuehring> No I'm using a differnt computer

Cory_> I'll be happy to provide a link with an image to help you locate the specific model #.

Cory_> When you receive the link please click on it to open the page and let me know if you are able to view it.

Cory_> It will start with 'PCG' or 'VGN' followed by alphabet and then number.

Eric Fuehring> are you a freaking computer or somehting?

Eric Fuehring> is this a real person???

Cory_> Eric, I am for real.

Eric Fuehring> ok. do you see that I am giving you the model number?

Eric Fuehring> that is the number!

Eric Fuehring> are you trying to tell me that that number is invalid?

Cory_> Please click on the start command and then click on the Run command.

Cory_> Then type msinfo32 in the Run command.

Eric Fuehring> Ok you know I'm not on the computer I am having problems with right now right?

Eric Fuehring> I don't have the sony viao in front of me right now. this morning I wrote the model number down. PCG-9J2L

Cory_> Eric, it is required to know the model # whether the Computer is having the VAIO Recovery to reinstall the Operating System.

Eric Fuehring> this is automated isn't it./

Eric Fuehring> a person would realize that I am trying to give you the model number but you don't understand it

Cory_> Eric, I am truly sorry for the difficulties in providing the exact model # of the Computer.

Eric Fuehring> yep your a computer not a person.

Eric Fuehring> thanks for this terrific "help:

Cory_> Eric, I am for real.

Eric Fuehring> HOW MUCH ARE THEY?

Cory_> This is a toll free # available at the above timings.

Cory_> Before that you need to give the valid model # to get the Recovery CDs.

Cory_> The exact cost information for the Recovery Discs is currently not available online.

Cory_> Eric, It may cost about $12 to $25.

Eric Fuehring> So, I will ask you again.....are you telling me that PCG-9J2L is not a good model number for a Sony Viao Laptop circa 2003 or so?

Cory_> Yes, Eric.

Eric Fuehring> that wan't so hard was it.

Cory_> The model # starts with the 'PCG' or 'VGN' followed by alphabet and then number.

Eric Fuehring> in fact that is a good number. It's just too old and you don't have it in your database anymore.

Eric Fuehring> you are a person aren't you

Cory_> Yes, Eric.

Cory_> I'm a person.

Eric Fuehring> yea right

I'm telling you that couldn't have been a person. It had to be a computer programed to answer questions. If it was a person it was the dumbest one I ever met.........

I would have lost my mind with responses like that.

You should have started inserting random words or phrases to see what the responses would be.

I tried again and got much better results.

user Eric has entered room

analyst Bradley_ has entered room

Bradley_> Hi Eric. Welcome to Sony Online Support. I’m Bradley. Please allow me a brief moment to review your concern.

Eric> Hi Bradley how are you today?

Bradley_> I'm doing well, thank you.

Eric> Well I was hunting this moring and got shot in the leg with a high powered rifle. On top of that my computer is acting up again.

Bradley_> Thanks for waiting, Eric. I’m sorry for the inconvenience you’re experiencing as the Computer is affected by Virus. I will be glad to assist you with the information to perform a System Recovery in the Computer.

Eric> that would be great

Bradley_> Eric, I'm really sorry for the accident.

Bradley_> Eric, PCG9J2L is the Hardware Model #, please locate the specific Model #, that's either above the keyboard on either side, on the hinge or around the frame of the LCD display.

Eric> I see. I must have written down the wrong thing this morning and I don't have the Sony Laptop infront of me right now.

Bradley_> Okay, Eric, It is required to perform a System Recovery in the Computer to remove any viruses from the Computer.

Bradley_> Are you using the XP Operating System in the Computer?

Bradley_> A System Recovery erases the Hard Drive and reinstalls the Software that originally came on the Computer.

Eric> Yes that's exactly what I want to do

Eric> but I don't have the original windows CD anymore

Eric> yes I have XP and that's what was originally on it

Bradley_> Eric, VAIO Computers are shipped with a hidden Partition in the Hard Drive of the Computer, which is called Recovery Wizard in the XP Operating System and Recovery Center in the Vista Operating System.

Eric> can I download the files i need from somewhere and burn it to a disk.

Eric> I see

Bradley_> You can use this Recovery Partition to create the Recovery Discs for the Computer as well as a System Recvoery in the Computer.

Eric> So your saying that I don't need a CD then right?

Eric> Sweet thanks for the help!

Eric> Sorry about the "shot my leg thing"

Bradley_> Yes, this Recovery Parition contains the preinstalled Operating System, all the Applications and the Drivers shipped.

Eric> I was trying to chat with "Chad" before and I was convinced that I was talking to a computer programed to answer frequently asked qutestions.

Bradley_> Eric, I’m sorry for the inconvenience you’re experiencing with the previous chat session.

Bradley_> Eric, it is required to restart the Computer to access the Recovery Wizard of the Computer.

Bradley_> Eric, it is required to restart the Computer and press the F10 key to access the Recovery Wizard of the Computer.

Bradley_> I'm sorry for the typo.

Eric> I'll do that. You have been great. Tell them to fire "Chad" and give his wages to you. Thanks again.

Bradley_> You're welcome.

Bradley_> Is there anything else I may assist you with today?

Eric> nope thanks

PC support (and you ISP Support) is entry level in the IT world, or you get someone from India, they generally keep a bunch of low-paid newbies around and a couple of people that actually know what they are doing, glad you got one that knew what he was doing this time.

You may want to still get that CD because if your hard drive dies, that recovery partition won't help much.
