Well I meant to say the speakers also. I think the whole system sounds fine to me. But then maybe I haven't heard a nice set of speakers, like you're suggesting. So does anyone live in central California area who has added nicer speakers and wants to show off their system? I guess I should have a listen and see if this is an upgrade I want to do myself.

Get with CAF150, he's sponsored by Boston Acoustics. Of course, his stereo will be extreme. I you can take a cover off to look at your speakers you'll see how cheap they look, than go to a stereo shop and look at a good set of speakers and compare what you saw. Have you done any reading up in the Audio System Forum?

No I haven't read much in the audio threads here. Mainly because I just never cared. Like I said my stereo sounds fine to me. But if I heard a nice system and liked it, I would do that upgrade as well.

Ok, since you've got me thinking about it, what does a good set of 4 speakers costs? Now realize two things; 1) money is no object when it comes to my truck. But 2) I don't listen to my system that loud, nor do I need others to hear it. I just want really nice sound at low to medium sound levels. Also any modifications to my truck is completely out of the question. By this I mean no cutting or "customizing" the panels. If the speakers don't fit in the openings, then they are disqualified. Maybe I should restart this in one of the audio threads.

So I guess the answer to my original question is, people do not like the stock speakers Ford is using?

I think it is an age thing. If it's too loud, your too old. The stock stereo won't 'crank' like the aftermarket radios. When I was in high school we all had to have loud stereos. I remember coming home and going to bed with my ears ringing. Well they still ring today, 24 hours a day. Everyone has to learn the hard way . The stock radios are a lot better today than 15 years ago. I have no plans to replace my stock stereo.

Hey Freezer,

I think it's just a matter of tastes and life styles. I'm pretty old but I still love the deep rich sound of a good stereo system.
My truck is an oasis that I escape to. I often like my music loud and that just isn't possible where I have lived over the years. I don't like to upset the neighbors.
So, having a nice vehicle and cruising down the highway I like to be Surrounded by the music. Feel it, not just hear it... I guess it sounds a little flaky but I still love it.
You can't get that full, rich, road noise killing, concert sound out of the Best that ford has to offer us. So I upgraded.

If your happy with what you hear out of your system, enjoy it. Some people don't even use their stereos!

Have a good weekend,
Mark

Cool

Freezer,

I understand where your coming from. I'm not into the loud bumping music from the truck/car two lanes over either. I do enjoy a nice clear sound. My head unit (stereo) is a Pioneer DHP-4000. (Your stock head unit is probally fine). I did order speakers from crutchfield. Pioneer makes some 6" x 8" that fit the factory mounts. (Easy to install!) I installed 2 way speakers in the back doors and 3 way speakers in the front doors all for aprox $180. Sounds great, big difference from the stock paper cones. Try www.crutchfield.com, They really helped me spec. in the speakers. Order a catalog and use them for information if nothing else.

That's if you're interested in some cost-effective after market equipment.

Loser1, since it sounds like you and I have similar tastes and desires for our sound systems, would you get in touch with me over email so I can ask you some more specific questions? This assumes of course you don't mind helping me out here. My adderess is bfriesen@falcon.csc.calpoly.edu

Cool

All I have to say is that, the stereos/speakers that Ford uses is just flat out junk in my opinion. The speakers can't handle anything, and the stereo just isn't loud enough. So, I quess that's why I upgraded the stereo to pushing 250+watts 2 months after purchasing the truck.

It's sad to say this, buy GM has a much better stereo/speakers for there vehicles.

Question What's so bad about the stock radio?

Ok, I have read this dozens on times in many different threads. What is so bad about the stock Ford radios? Everyone seems to complain that Ford needs to include a better radio. I have a Lariat with the single CD and as far as I'm concerned that is a very nice stereo system. Nice sound, some good bass, very clear, easy to see and work controls, etc. I've even been complimented by others on my radio. Now sure people two lanes over from me aren't going to be able to hear my music, but I hate that about others anyway. I mean there is only so loud you can have your music. Well maybe someone out there can explain what just sucks about it, cause I don't see it. Thanks.

Freezer,

I don't think its so much the radio as it is the speakers that people are complaining about. Ford factory speakers, even the premium ones, are low quality. If you think your stereo sounds good now, try buying some good quality Infinty's or Boston Acoustic speakers. I think you'd notice a difference.

Red face

The "premium speakers" are indentical part #'s as the standard speakers.
Both are "whizzer cone" equipted.
No tweeters.
No coax.
Puny magnets.
Replacing the speakers was the single biggest improvement to my system.
Components are best option but I've heard that the kenwood 5x7s Excelons are really good also.
I think the head units are fine.
The only reason I replaced mine was I wanted a CD player.
(430.00 from Ford) Aftermarket gives you much better unit for the $.
Also aftermarket easier to add amps and stuff.
The only difference between the "premium" and standard systems is more power.

subwoofer coming soon
More mods as funds become avalible.

Cool

Here is my .02 for what it's worth. I am by no means a stereo professional, so I went and talked with all the high end car audio shop's in my area looking to upgrade my speakers. I was told that the problem is not the speakers but the source (head unit). Not saying the speakers are great, just that the head unit does not have the power to drive them. They said when the required power is more than the head unit can deliver it get's a "clipped" signal, which can result in speaker damage. By replacing your speakers with aftermarket ones you may increase this problem. Every shop recommended I started with replacing the head unit or adding a quality amp to get a clean signal to the speakers. This is what I was told by the "professionals" talk to local shops and see what they recommend.

I'd love to have a better sound system in my car but i would be afraid of it getting ripped off. I have a good system in my house though since i am a hoplessly dedicated audiophile.
