Went Geocaching over the weekend.

I'll start by saying that I now that there are a few threads on geocaching but they are very old, so I figured we needed a new one.

Now, I went caching for the first time Sunday. It was pretty fun. We found 6 of the 7 that we looked for. We think it could have been muggled. haha!

Anyway, anybody else into geocaching? I am now shopping around for a GPS unit.

I have yet to try it myself but I know several people that do it. One is pretty addicted. I may give it a try. Should be able to pick up a used GPS on ebay or Craigslist.

wow, that seems really stupid to me. but thats just my opinion. i can see how people who enjoy playing with there GPS's (like my dad) could enjoy something like this tho.

its actually quite fun, i did it a couple years back and i was surprised there were places out in my area that had some. i got some cool stuff from the places we went, but i just left like a dollar in each one i went to, as i had no clue what other people left behind.

I got into geocaching for awhile a few years back and had a blast. Where I live now there's not many and seldom a new one. I've already found most of them. I keep thinking about putting another one out myself but never seem to get around to it. I always take a little trinket and I have them all saved. Almost every one is a reminder of seeing new places I never would have otherwise. I bought a bunch of small individually wrapped rubber ducks from ebay a long time ago to use as trading swag. That way I didn't have to think too hard about what I had with me to trade. I would just leave a rubber duck.

I have two travel bugs in the wild from about 4 years ago. One went all the way to Hawaii and back! That would be Krusty Krescent. 10344.1 miles covered. Right now it's sitting in St.Paul after completing it's goal. My buddy will turn it loose again some day.
The other is Wally Walleye. He's only traveled 2679.1 miles. Stuck in Nebraska now

So, you take whatever item is there, and replace it with something else? What kind of items do you leave? Do you just keep the item you found, or reuse it at another cache?

You take something if you want to. There's always more than one thing and seldom anything of real value. Normally if someone takes something they leave something. What you take and leave is up to you. If you want to leave what you took in another one that's fine. Some caches may have a theme you can try and stick with but rules are pretty loose. Just don't leave anything perishable, anything that will melt or sharp objects.

Some people just sign the logbook to prove they found it and then log it as a find on the website.

If you look at the cache profiles and comments from people you will see the type of things that were put in the cache at the beginning and afterwards.

Geocaching will help you find places that you never knew existed...

I pull it up on nearly every trip I take out of town just to see where the caches are located. On many occasions, I'll make a trip out to an area where they seem 'dense' to see what it is. On way more than one occasion, I've found small, off-the-path, spots that are typically only known by the locals.

It's a pretty good time, honestly...

Like Rockpick said, it will take you places that you would never know existed. It's a lot of fun really. Kind of geeky, but if you want to get the kids out of the house they will enjoy finding some of the hidden treasures. My wife and I actually started it for the exercise and now we're hooked.

Now I look back at it, it's kind of funny how many times I've walked by a micro cache and never realized it was there until I started hunting them.

o i didn't know you actually leave something and pick up something, they makes it interesting then. i took it as you just find a spot someone told you to. guess i didn't read enough to find that out.
