Vietnam Questions

Talking to my wife the other day & the subject of Vietnam cam up & I was wondering if anyone could answer some questions on the subject.
What actually was the start of it, ie how did the US get involved. Also how did it end? Was there some kind of treaty with someone. I know that many think that it was a war that we (the US) had no place in being & I am not trying to upset and vets etc but I would appreciate it if someone could assist me as no-one I have asked seems to know any answers.

A question you might ask:

Why there? Why try to stop the spread of Communism halfway around the globe. A logistic nightmare!
We had Cuba growing as a Communist stronghold just 90 miles off our shores at the same time. Our military could have used weekend trips to fight Communism and still been home for supper most nights.

From: Georgia on my mind...
The Gulf of Tonkin incident was the catalyst that really got us into the shooting match.
