I have a HP Photosmart C4240 Printer, Scanner, and Copier. It copies and prints fine, but tonight was the first time I've tried to use the scanner. When I try to scan, it says USB not connected. I do have the USB connected and it still prints fine. Any suggestions?

 

I'd completely uninstall it, then reinstall it with the latest driver/software package from the HP site. Do NOT plug the USB cable in till the install routine tells you to.

What version of Windows do you have? Have you tried a different USB cable yet? Have you tried a different USB port on the computer?

How are you trying to scan? Through HP Director? From within another application? With the Windows scanner and camera wizard?

No I haven't tried another USB, I'll look around for another that is long enough to reach.
Yes I've tried other USB ports on the computer.

Scanning pictures, using the scan button on the printer.

 

This probably won't help, I am as computer illiterate as they come, but....

My Brother MFC will not scan from the button on the machine either.

I don't run Vista, but on XP Pro, I go to the control panel, open up the printers and faxes module then open up the scanner and cameras module and then click on my designated scanner and open that up.

Then, it works off of the PC, not off of the button on the MFC machine.

Maybe worth a try.
