I have both family and friends who are metally handicapped. I coach a great kid, with down syndrome, love him to death, but I am sick to death of this PC BS. You don't like that word ? It offends your little ears ? My buddy i coach, gets pissed at people like you ! He doesn't want your added sympathy, he doesn't want your pitty, he wants to be teased and and have fun like the rest of the kids. He doesn't want to live in a padded room, where no one teases him and everyone is nice. He does something stupid, and he says "sorry Im retarded" or gets the point across, and he laughs like a little kid !!! His "special" friends also laugh and joke around in the same manner. You shoudl hear the stuff they say about people like you ! Makes me roll sometimes. These kids have a great out look on life, if you are sheltering your as bad as it seems, SHAME on you. You should be ashamed of yourself, for not allowing them to live a full, rich, fun life. Its awesome, My bud has the biggest heart I have ever seen on a person, and for you to belittle him, and feel the need to stick up for him, makes me sick. You don't want your ears hurt, don't go outside, don't go online, don't watch tv, don't open a book, and you can protect yourself in a little bubble of saftey, you ......

I hear you MT ... I've got a buddy who's son has down syndrome and he's such a great person. Every time he sees anyone he has to give them the biggest hug in the world. It's great. It's pretty funny when he gets mad though. Talk about rage and than all of a sudden it's fine and he goes on his way.

 

the hugs are GREAT !!! The kid is strong as a mule, and can lift me up ! (i am no small fella either ! ) Every day, first thing when I get to practice, he is there waiting, and runs up for the hug !

The rage is another issue, and yes, as strong as he is, his "fits" can become difficult, but once you learn how to calm him down, and get to know him better, it become nothing. I have even seen him lecture the other kids on the team, telling them that he doesn't want them to be "over nice" and "allow him to win" or "give him anything more then anyone else". Like I said, he's a great kid, and the best damn ball boy, water boy, assistant coach, and kicker I have ever seen. He needs NO PERSON's pity.

 

Same thing with this kid. If he even senses pitty, it will either make him mad or depressed. It's really sad. So we just treat him like a normal person like he wants to be treated and he handles it great. Deep down, you have to feel bad, but there's nothing to do but to make the best of the situation.
