Nextel "push to talk" is excellent. Their cell service is the world's worst.

The best coverage in the US is usually Verizon or AT&T. They are the 2 biggest and have the most towers.

Great info fellas, thanks allot!! Can always count on you guys for answers.

I just started looking for an alternative to Nextel yesterday. I have always had Nextel since they came into the picture. But that was in Michigan, now that I'm traveling it's not working out, not even close. I have a work issue and a personal unit and neither is any different when it comes to signal strength and dropped calls. It's screwing things up to say the least.

So I just started looking for the best option. Once I get pointed in the right direction, I can resolve this. I'm not going to worry about International -There's only two places I'll have to visit - Berkshire (UK) & Toulouse (France) once in a great while, but hell they supply a laptop w/incall video for correspondence; wish they did that in the states!

Now that all the orientation formalities have been covered, I'm stationed in IN for a two year stay. Recently have learned that I'll need to visit Austin, LA and San Mateo from time to time. Still trying to get use to this.

Anyway, I can't be screwing with an unreliable service and was looking for a cell service to fit the needs specified.

Quote from Steve - a dual band (850 & 1900 MHz) phone is all that is needed in the US since neither the 900 or 1800 MHz bands are used in the US.

Nextel-compatible repeaters are not cheap. However, if your current handset has an external antenna port, a decent external antenna will help tremendously. The drawback is that you have to remain tethered to the antenna to keep the signal.

Thanks, this helps tremendously - I should be able to find what I need now.

Haha , yea, I have an extra antenna from a phone I trashed. Maybe I'll skin it and alligator clip a wire onto it just for sh^ts and giggles. Until I get a different set up I need a freakin phone now darnet!!

I have been with Verizon wireless for nearly 8 years now and there isn't anything that could get me to drop this carrier.

From coast to coast. Beach to mountain. I get great coverage everywhere.

If you travel a lot, you probably want one of the national carriers like Verizon or AT&T. IMO Verizon has better coverage, and with the addition of Alltel it will be even bigger.

When we were off the coast of Texas doing some saltwater fishing about 15 miles out I was the only one with cell service. 2 of the other guys had AT&T and 1 guy had T-mobile.

Granted, Verizon is one of the last carriers to get the newest latest greatest phones. No iPhone, etc. They just added push-to-talk which is a shot across the bow for Sprint/Nextel.

The last time I checked, Verizon was offering some promotion that you could use their network for 30 days and if you were'nt happy they would refund all your money for calls, equipment, activation, taxes and let you out of your contract. They called it "The Test Drive". It was virtually a risk free way to try them out.

Oxlander , I went for it. I picked out the phone, plan and what not. Sounded great! But they require that I be here to sign for the package when it arrives..? No can do; Not missing work for that ...

Back to the drawing board

I have to figure out a go around. Can anyone sign? I'll get a signal on the Nextel in the field tomorrow and make a few calls. May I can have it shipped to the post office or something.

Back to the drawing board - Damn , this sucks. I wanted that one. Verizon has the best service for this area and covered other areas of interest as well.
If your wife will be at home, just put it in her name.
